I think part of recovery is learning to find better coping skills as well as being ok with being in discomfort as we're working through things.

I like the title of the tv special "The Only Way Out is In"
So true. For me active alcoholism was always about escape. It took me a while to realise that I was trying to escape from myself. However, life is so that wherever I am, wherever I go, I am there. There is no escape.
Through anapana and vipassana I learned that the release I was always looking for is found through not escaping. Through facing up to the inner self. Anapana and vipassana give me a technique whereby I can do that. Wherever I may be.
