Hello Overs!
Memorial day this Monday in the US. Similar to Remembrance Day in commonwealth nations, and several others who were allies. As retired military, the remembering is important to me. At 3PM on Monday, my little 3X5' flag will be lowered to half staff on our front deck, and I will render a hand salute while an mp3 of taps that is exactly one minute long, plays on my portable Bluetooth speaker.

Memorial Day
Begun in 1866 to honor Civil War Combatants, it was later expanded to honor all brave men and women who served this country in all wars.
Between cookouts, picnics, vacations and sales, Memorial Day may be losing its meaning!
Please take one minute, at 3 PM local time on Memorial Day to Remember and honor those brave men and women, who paid the piper that we may dance.

They left behind a legacy of sadness and of tears.
A folded flag, the sound of Taps, the pride mixed in their leaving,
With heads held high, and tears in eye, the loved ones still are grieving.
Remember them.
Went in harm's way, so young, and they never will grow older,
Leaving memories, and pictures, citations in a folder.
They left their sons, their little girls, to grow up wondering why,
Their daddy that they loved so well, went off to war to die.
Remember them.
For some it changed, and mother, was the casualty of war,
The arms that hugged them never would again, forevermore.
Yet all were sons and daughters, and left behind an ache,
In the hearts of those, whose turn should come, before their children's wake.
Remember them.
They rest in peace, some say, and who am I to doubt it?
The higher purpose it was served, the enemy was routed.
Some came home, some never went, some only watched the news,
But they will never hold their child, or argue current views.
Remember them.
It wasn't meant, in leaving, when they all marched off to war,
That we'd be left without them, from the cannon's deadly roar.
I'm sure that they, would rather, have been here for all of us,
But someone had to fight those wars, someone pay the cost.
Remember them.
At 3 PM, this Monday, my flag will fly half staff,
As all across the nation, floats the somber sound of Taps.
It's only for one minute, or maybe three or four,
In tears, I will remember, those who died in every war.

Really nice poem Itchy.
I'm making progress on lots of little stuff around the house. Yesterday, I got my bedroom put back together post-paint job. I also sorted through all of the books in my house and got rid of maybe 1/4 of them. Then I organized and consolidated the rest. I love to read and have a soft spot for books, but the truth is that I'm unlikely to re-read most books, so what is the point of keeping them around? Of course, I still kept a bunch, but at least I reduced the number considerably.
Today's plan is to do more house stuff. I need to mow the lawn and then I have a visitor coming today or tomorrow so I want to get the house all cleaned up. I keep it pretty clean, but when I have company stopping by, I do that extra little bit to try to make it look perfect.

I'm back after a flying trip home. Mom was pleasantly surprised to see me. We took her out to Baker's Square (her favorite) and then visited with her for awhile back at her new home. She really seems to be happy these days, so that's nice. I loaded up my car with some more stuff from her house. My niece and her husband are going to buy it once the financing goes thru, hopefully by August.
Itch, thanks for the reminder about Memorial Day. My favorite uncle saw heavy fighting as a Marine in Korea. My grandfather fought in the Army "over there" during WWI. My Dad had an Air Force desk job stateside (San Antonio) during the Korean conflict. I've also got some other uncles and cousins that served. Luckily, none of them died in the line of fire, however I will take some time this weekend to remember those that did.

evening Overs hope everyone is ok were knocking up a Mac Cheese tonight with chicken bacon mushrooms sweetcorn and lots of cheese ... chedder emmental mozzarella and some parmigiano reggiano

Thanks all.
I've lost some very close to me, both from my home in Combat, and serving in Peace. I take remembering them very seriously. I deal with their loss by living my life because of them, and all the ones I never had the honor of serving with before, during, and after my watch.
If you can read, thank a teacher. If you speak your native tongue, instead of an invader's, thank a soldier.
Least, I'm thinking about it. I do have a body of work not even posted on my website I keep threatening to publish. Then talk myself out of it because I don't think it is literate enough. I write, but have difficulty thinking myself a "writer," or poet."
Thanks for saying so all. Y'all in the English current and past Commonwealth countries remember them too on the 11 hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month. I think I can turn my thoughts from me, for one minute, and work again, another year, from there.

I hope we don't get more tornados from the storms today and the severe ones again all week, especially tonight. (Monday)
The Red River is out of its banks, and all the rain from up north hasn't even come down river yet. Every rain and storm record has been broken this Spring here.
We hope to not need our swim gear. Grass still uncut, as it's all too soft and even push mowers sink and get stuck. I may be cutting it all with a weed eater and calf rubber boots.
We're getting ours and California's rain too as they continue a record drought.
