My tipping point was when I realised that I actually did have a choice: I could drink or not drink. Up until then I assumed that I had to drink, in the beginning not drinking was hard so I filled the time (when I used to drink) with other things.

Now I don't drink and I fill the time with the living.

Realising that there is a choice tipped me into choosing.

What a great thread. For me it provides perspective that I desperately need. Primarily, it CAN AND WILL get worse if I don't make changes. Thank you all.

Overwhelming thoughts of discontinuing living finally woke me up......It is called the jumping off point. Could no longer imagine my life with or without alcohol. I had to actually ask for help which was miraculous.

Glad your here - keep coming back!

Welcome to SR. You will find great support here.

For me, it was a fundamental shift in thinking.

I had said and done some crazy stuff while drinking, woke up in strange places with strange people, and with painful hangovers.

That was my life until I turned 30 and got married.

My drinking continued, but instead of all the craziness it turned into a daily habit that my children began to comment on and I saw my life as it was -- a replica of my alcoholic fathers. What I wanted never to do and who I never wanted to become is exactly what had happened.

I quit and I am now happily sober. It's hard some days, but totally worth it.

Realizing I had some control over my actions really helped me.

Someone brilliantly said on here recently "I was going to get sober even if I was the first person in the history of mankind to stop drinking."

(If the brilliant author of that would come forward I'd love to remember who said that!)

I also was so angry with myself at the end. There is one difference between the people who get sober and those who don't. The ones who get sober stop drinking alcohol.

Sometimes I love no BS sayings like that, other times they annoy me. Lately I've been in the mood for "cut the crap" slogans like that. I know it's not that easy though.
