Sobriety
There were suicides long before medications were available. And yes, some people commit suicide while on meds, and some do after stopping them. And some people attempt or commit suicide before a med is ever put into their body, and some people get on meds and get better.
My sister has schizophrenia. She was hallucinating, delusional, and completely detached from reality. She went on meds and they stopped the hallucinations and delusions. Is she cured? Nope. The meds had side effects that were not ideal or pleasant. But my sister can live a somewhat normal life now. She's not afraid 24 hours a day that the FBI is after her and she doesn't see things that are not there. The meds are not perfect, but not being psychotic definitely makes it easier for her to function.
My point is, don't throw the baby out with the bathwater or see the forest for its trees. Psych meds help many people. Some people they don't help at all. This is going to be the case with any medication whether you have clinical depression, Crohn's disease, hyperthyroidism, or cancer. The meds will help some people but not all.
