Yes. Thanks.

My uncle -- dead alcoholic suicide.
His twin brother -- died cirrhosis alcoholic.
My first boyfriend -- died car accident under the influence before 20.
My cousins: suicide/drugs, suicide/alcoholic, died car accident under the influence at 20.
My college lover -- died alcoholic suicide.

Those are all still fresh enough to me. I've been very lucky, but how much luck is allotted to one person? I'm taking one card out of the deck of chances that work against the possibility of a decent life for what remains of mine.

It is from these types of threads I draw from the well of wisdom. At mid 50's I am cognizant of the fact that time is not on my side......sorry, Mick!

Early on here I read a thread about Kindling. It clicked and I remain vigilant. My sponsor told me almost 8 months back - If you're going to drink again, don't quit. It will kill you if you start up again at your age.

Recently I read from a post here about a members dad, I believe it was. The person had two years sobriety, went back out and died while drinking of a heart attack within a few days.

I have to keep it simple, but it's difficult to remember this daily as Life sucks me in to the daily toil. Thanks for the post MM and Capt'n - yes, a daily reprieve based on the fitness of our spiritual condition.

The last part of the serenity prayer says it best for me in staying focused:
Living one day at a time
Enjoying one moment at a time
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace
Taking as He did, this sinful world
As it is, not as I would have it
Trusting that He will make all things right
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life
And supremely happy with Him
Forever and ever in the next

I got sober when I was 31 years old as well, wolf.

It was high time.

I have had the chance to go through 2/3 of my adult life sober thus far.

Sure beats the first 13 years of my "adulthood."

Stay at it, amigo.

So much gold in this thread. Thanks for starting this, Mountainman, and thanks to everyone else, too.

54 yo here. Started drinking at 16 or so, it's kind of the thing to do in my family

I consider myself lucky to have made it this far and figure at this point I've had enough alcohol for 10 lifetimes. Somehow I've managed to have a decent career and raise a couple of awesome kids.

I really believe this is my time to quit. It has to be.

Thanks, that makes sense to me.
It was not that easy sobering up this time.
I think that it took much help
from a Higher Power
wouldn't want to have to ask yet again.
