I have to agree with you whole heartedly. I am an outsider, I have always felt this way my whole life, and when I need the most, the na/aa groups says "hey, you gotta believe in something greater than yourself to get better". UGH. I can believe in human beings, and I can believe in myself and nature, and life. But I don't have to beleive in a male violent angry shamefilling God.
I am grateful to have found this site.

Why "UGH"????

"They" are right -- you have to believe in something greater/bigger/other than yourself to get better.

And you do. You just said so: other human beings, Nature, Life.

Of course you don't have to believe in an angry violent God, of either gender. And no one is telling you you need to. Except maybe your disease.

I remind myself that this is the authors concept of God to his understanding and in AA we can have an understanding of our own, even if its different from the author or various author's of the Big Book.

I do the same. To me everything in the BB is a suggestion or opinion of the author(s) and like my understanding God I an free to develop my own opinion or understanding Of the BB. In this way I avoid any conflicts with my core beliefs.

Thank you zencat - you say this much better than I can! I did have to allow others to believe differently from me in order to be "comfortable" with and be able to use the suport of AA.

Thank you for the share!

Every time I find a person thinking differently I remind myself that just as they have a different perspective, they probably see me in a similar light. This often helps me be comfortable with the different views and support of my recovery program.

I had an open mind today and attended my first AA meeting in 6 months, a member reminded me. It was the medicine that i needed today. The wisdom and encouragement and love I felt by the other members in the group relieved me of my anger and dislike towards the male run dominated religion of my childhood. I know I need people to get well today. I have tried to 'do it alone' for too long. I am going to try to 'easy does it' and take what I need and try not to get sicker by blaming and complaining about 'god' to these alcoholics who only are trying to recover today...
Still sober today
How are you doing?
