| Pretzel logic
I found this in one of my quote books today. Something I jotted down when I began my quest to improve the way I think. "Man is not troubled by events, but what man tells himself about those events." Ten Common Cognitive Distortions: 1. All or nothing thinking. Black or white. 2. Overgeneralization. Always/never... 3. Mental Filter. Dwell on negative aspect. Filters out the positive 4. Disqualify the positive. Changing pluses into minuses. 5. Jump to conclusions: a)mind reading b)fortune telling 6. Magnification/minimization (Catastrophizing) 7. Emotional reasoning. I feel like x therefore I am x. 8. “Should statements. 9. Labeling. 10. Personalization. I more or less hate these kinds of lists, because I can always identify with most of what's listed. And I'm not a real big fan of made-up words, but I like catastrophizing. Maybe that's because I am so damn good at doing that. But whether I like this list or not, it gives me food for thought on how to continue to improve my thought processes. And that is a good thing. |

Had myself a 1 to 10 day today, in more ways than I care to mention! I was therefore pretty darn grateful for the little bit I learned about REBT while in treatment. Disputing beliefs in my reaction to events in my life has saved me a lot of unnecessary grief the last little while. Thanks Gabe. |

Gabe, you're such an angel. It's so good to have you around - little JG just loves the attention!

They're following me around too Gabe! Geesh! It is like they listened in on a conversation I had with my boyfriend and listed all of the things I did wrong! Wow. Thanks for the eye-opener. I will print this and keep it handy for the next time I have a deep conversation with him. Love, Susann

I need to add one: 11. Script-writing I do this all the time. I anticipate events yet to come and script-write how they may or may not turn out. I think it will prepare me for such future events. Wrong. Those events never turn out the way I imagine, and I end up at a loss for words, even after my carefully crafted script. I'm much better off being inspired in the moment than trying to write notes and have them mentally handy should such occasions arise. |

Gabe, I do that too - all the time. I waste so much time and energy for something that never ever turns out the way it did in my head. Most of the time it's nowhere near as bad as I predicted. Just call me doom and gloom gal...
