Planning ahead

For those of you with knowledge about escaping opiates for pain, can you please tell me about "what if the pain comes back"? I have not had this happen yet and would like some insight on what actions to take if it does. I am 7 days free of opiates.

Hi klopper. I found that after my dependence went down over the counter pain relievers taken according to directions often help my pain. There are also many non-narcotic pain relievers available if this is not helping you.

Yes, I do suffer from chronic pain. I also have to take prescription drugs on a daily basis. The key for me is to keep the pain tolerable and treat the rest of the pain with OTC in place of higher levels of opiates.

Thanks again! Aleve worked for headaches most for me.

I dont guess there is generally a time when the chronic pain "strikes back" in a demonic backlash for taking its opiates away??? That is one thing I am considering might take place and I don't want it to. WHAT WILL IT BE LIKE IF THAT HAPPENS?

Pain is _not_ a living thing. Pain is a chemical reaction in the body that is useful to tell us that it's time to go find a doctor. It's no different than watching sugar disolve in water, there is no emotion, no intention, no desire.

Addiction is a whole different thing. That is something that happens inside of our minds and souls. That is the one that can take on our emotions and intentions.

The easy way is to _prevent_ that from happening in the first place. I keep in continuous contact with my 12 step recovery program to insure that the addiction _never_ comes back. I practice _daily_ prevention.

I also follow my docs instructions exactly as written. I have asked them tons of questions and I understand _exactly_ how all these meds work in my body. I also am a member of another support program, not 12 step, for my medical condition.

No matter how bad my future may be, I need only pick up the phone to find people that understand what I am going thru and that can help me survive and overcome. That's what I do for my own "prevention"

Mike

It sounds to me like you are awfullizing. Sure, the pain could come back...what is the worst that happens if it does? Will the pain cause you to be struck down by lightening on the golf track and keel over right there? Of course not.

Assuming the pain comes back (and that's a large assumption right there), you can hurt really bad and call a doctor the next morning. You can try medicines that are available over the counter. You can try non-narcotic medicines. You CAN have someone hold your medication. You can be honest with your medical practitioner.

Now its not so scary after all, is it?
