I had a gastric emptying study done last Thursday and the results came back today. The vagus (sp) nerve does not contract to allow the food to completely leave my stomach and there is always some left over. I initially went in because of pain in my upper stomach under my rib cage. The pain has been intense like a stabbing at times or just dull and achy at times. Has anyone else ever had this or know anything about this condition. I'm not asking for medical advise.

I haven't had that, but actually had a portion of my vagus nerve severed almost three years ago now to slow acid production. The opening out of my stomach into the small intestine had almost completely scarred shut, and that had to be surgically repaired. I have not suffered from gastric reflux since the surgery. It had gotten so bad prior to surgery that I couldn't keep much of anything down, and my stomach wasn't emptying either, but due to the physical scarring of the pylorus.

Thank you for sharing that Freedom. What you went through sounds absolutely awful. I'm glad you are better now.

You're welcome! Does the doctor have some sort of solution for your problem now? My surgery left me with a 'zipper' from breastbone to bellybutton, and I told the surgeon he completely ruined any future career for me as a stripper!

No solution yet. I will be having the CAT scan Monday morn. I have acid reflux and IBS so this is just something in addition, everything just backing up. I guess I really do have a potty mouth... eww!

I am not a medical professional but I do have a decent knowledge of medical conditions either due to my own history or that of friends or loved ones. I wanted to be a nurse but have too weak of a stomach (no pun intended) Anyway, there is a condition called gastroparesis (sp?) you may want to research. I don't know much about it except one of the symptoms is that the stomach fails to empty. I have seen members discuss it on a chronic pain and invisible diseases message board I am a member of and thought about that when I read your post. I also have some personal experience to share on this. I had a period of almost a year of constant nausea back in the 90s and at the time I also had GERD and IBS. I lived off of phenergan. My gastro didn't know what to make of it. I had an upper and lower gi that were negative and some other tests and then came the gastric emptying study. Back then they had me eat an egg salad sandwich with radioactive particles in it and then lay perfectly still on a table while a huge camera sat right above me taking one picture a minute for an hour. At the end of an hour only seven percent of the food had moved through when it should have been about 70 percent! They gave me a diagnosis of gastric hypomotility and said it was pretty rare. They started me out on Reglan to empty the stomach and it helped some but then they came out with a drug called Propulsid. For me this was a wonderdrug and it emptied my stomach and gave me my life back. I ended up having weightloss surgery and the re-routing of everything solved my issues. Good thing because the FDA pulled Propulsid. Anyway, from what I was told it isn't real common but maybe you could check out the term gastric hypomotility and current treatment options and maybe even look at the gastroparesis (sp?) thing just to see the symptoms and if they match. I hope something I have suggested will prove to be of use in your quest for answers!! Sometimes its just trying to figure out where to START the search for answers that is the hardest or at least it was for me when I started suspecting fibromyalgia. PM me if you have any questions about my experiences that I didn't cover here and best wishes! Hugs, Kellye

Kellye - Thank you for your very informative post. I also have acid reflux and IBS, and the delayed gastric emptying now to boot. I had to eat the radioactive egg 1 1/2 weeks ago and it confirmed that my stomach was not emptying. Monday I had a CAT scan and the results should be back today. Last night I was in so much pain between my breat bones and behind my lower right ribs, my husband almost took me to the ER. I will be glad to have answers.
