| Ksos, Good news on your hopefully finding a way to resolve your pain and acheive more clarity! When you get the pump implanted will it block the impulses (if you have any) to use other substances? Just curious, don't know much about that pain pump thing. Or will you still need to work a program to keep clean? I had a temporary morphine pump when I was in for my spine surgery last year, and during that time, I didn't have any urges to use any other drugs, but I was quite groggy from it. Your thing is probably different though, the permanent one? Anyway, good luck, sounds like you've done your homework. kj |

| Well Ksos, From reading somethings about pumps online and knowing a couple of people who have had them, its probably going to be the best course for you to take. I wasn't sure at first, but now I think it is the best decision. For you, for your recovery, and for your high levels of pain. You mentioned that you're levels of pain meds would have to keep going up and up, if you don't get the pump. That would hinder you from getting a good job and there will be a point where the oral meds just won't work for you anymore. God bless you, and keep you safe. I am on board with you getting the pump installed. I will try to email you tomorrow. I have a few busy days coming up. Keep in touch and let me know when you're going in to get this done. Love Always; Jaz |

Hi KJ.... As usual, I am up at 4:50 AM but I have no coffee! You asked great questions and I only know about this whole process from people who have had it and the literature. I know I have to work a program no matter what! I know that if I abandon my supports, than all of this means nothing, beause I also am a cross addicted person with benzos and opiates, or I can easily fall back into taking a needle and injecting myself with dope. I was told by several pain patients that they have no desire to use other drugs. One woman even showed me where the pump was but I could not visually see it at all. A couple of his patients said they thought they were overmedicated at first and that the doc immediately adjusted the dosages and they actually forgot about the pain and lead normal lives. I am just anxious about the withdrawal from methadone and being given the morphine in a pump. Doc told me I'll feel nothing in terms of withdrawal and said that I will have the medicine continuously, but I will have no side effects like I am high or anything. He just said that I will finally be rid of pain. My main thought now is when I will be admitted for this procedure??? Ksos

Jazzy, I slur my speech all the time and I am convinced that this issue has negatively infliencinfluneced my job interviews. My MD, my family, anyone who has heard me speak, have told me that I slur...I know what I must look stoned. I mean, I feel like I will not hook up with a job UNTIL I get this done...I'll keep you apprised of everything!! Love always, K-

| (((Ksos))) I was thinking about you the other day. A few years ago, I ruptured a disk in my back. I have never had such excruciating pain. I went to a clinic, was given strong lortabs and somas but it didn't touch the pain, no matter how many I took. I went to my doctor, speech slurred, OBVIOUSLY under the influence and told him "well, my SPEECH may be affected, but my PAIN isn't". He gave me mepergan, which took away a bit of the pain. I remember taking care of patients with pancreatitis and the pain they were in. I, honestly, don't think I could even think about anything else but the pain. I know people deal with chronic pain and I admire them. But I understand how hard it would be to work on recovery when all you can think about is how much you're hurting. It took me 6 weeks to be able to tie my shoes, but after 3 days, I went back to work as a nurse in the busiest ER in Atlanta....when the pain began getting better, I realized how much we take for granted when we are healthy. I'm excited to see how life goes for you, without pain...I hate to see any of my friends in pain! Hugs and prayers! Amy |

| ksos, My apologies for just now getting around to reading this post. Have you had the procedure yet? I hope it will work wonderfully for you. As you know, I also work in the medical field and have seen many people with morphine pumps. It seems to work well for many folks. I am wondering about some things though, because a lot of those patients I had seen with morphine pumps said they also still took narcotic pain meds. They said the pump alone was not enough. Do you know if that is common to continue taking oral meds with the pump in place? If I understood you correctly, you will not be on those meds any longer. Maybe it is just that these patients I have seen had been on the pump for a very long time and needed something orally for breakthrough pain. I don't know. Just curious to your thoughts on this. I wouldn't worry too much about methadone withdrawal. It seems to me that with the pump in place and giving you a continous supply, that withdrawal shouldn't occur. Basically the methadone is being replaced with a more potent narcotic, so I don't think the withdrawal should be much of an issue. They may actually need to give you a huge dose of the morphine initially to keep the w/d at bay. But then the morphine dose can be adjusted to a comfortable level that works for you! I also was wondering about the neurontin. You said you wouldn't have to take it anymore, and I wondered if this is a wise choice. The morphine is going to treat your pain, but it can't treat the spinal nerves like neurontin can. Just something to keep in mind and perhaps ask the doctor about. It would be great if you didn't have to take it, but don't think it's the end of the world if you need to. It is a good medication at treating the actual source of the pain. I think you're making a great choice ksos!!!! I applaude you for finally taking this huge step. Keep up the positive thoughts, as we all know that helps the healing process tremendously. You will be in my thoughts and prayers!!!! Keep us updated on the situation! butterfly19 ![]() |

| ksos, just stopping by to let you know I'm sending good thoughts your way. I know a couple folks with the pump and its worked well for both of them. One of them did need to have it adjusted but then it worked great. She also had the slurring speech when she was on the MSContin and is living a normal life now. Its probably been a life saver for her. |

I just finished writing a post to you and now I cannot find it. but this is exactly what is hopefully not going to happen anymore--well, I mean, not because of the methadone and nuerontin.... You made an excellent point that I will be much more able to work on my recovery although I have my own concerns about whether or not I can be in NA while on the pump. My sponsor thinks I may encounter some "attitudes" and assured me that he and I will work on these issues. All of My Love to Everyone who has expressed their care, ESH, and love! I probably will be too nervous to speak to the cutey pie nurses, too : ( Thanks for discovering this peaceful oasis....

Hi Anna! I did not answer one of your questions last post. I did go on the next interview which was with the executive director! I did very well, at least in my own assessment, but I felt a little out of wack...I do not believe he noticed any of my own doubts, and I believe that I made an extra effort to not be intoxicated by taking a job like this! We shall hopefully see if I am the one. If not, there will be other opportunities! Still waiting for my admission date...I really hope I hear something next week!

Hey butterfly 19! I also have heard that some patients still require oral meds as well, even with the pump. Again, I wish I knew more than I do, but I would speculate, that their pain may be worse than mine or that they may have had end of life issues...I am just hoping that I am nt one of the people that will need oral meds, if it turns out that I do, then I will have to do it. My pain Doc says that I will NOT NEED any oral meds after this procedure. Honestly, I would be disappointed if I needed more pills to take, even after having this procedure done. I cannot function with the methadone I am on. It is too high of a dose, yet I need it for the pain...Conversely, about the Nuerontin.... My pain MD told me that he would take me off of the Nuerontin. He said that the Morphine will be sufficient, and he smiled. I felt a tinge of fear when he smiled as if I was going to feel nothing. I really should have asked him about this...I also believe that Nuerontin is an excellent medication and he once offered me Lyrica instead, but I expressed that the Nuerontin potentiates, in my opinion, the Methadone and also hits those smooth tissues that you spoke about... You certainly know your Nuerontin and Methadone issues! Thanks butterfly 19 I really appreciated your post info. By the way, I happen to be on the highest dose of Nuerontin that one can be on, which is 3600 mg....Do you think this is too dangerous of a dose? Thanks,

| You are welcome Ksos. Having been in chronic pain for more of my life than not watching someone else get the chance to have a procedure like this makes me so happy! One of the friends I mentioned did go back on oral meds, she chose to take something for breakthrough pain rather than have a slightly higher dose on the pump on a regular basis. Everyone is different. I didn't know Neurotin potentiates narcotics. That would make sense. I could never tolerate it, not even at 50 mgs. When on it, I would literally sit down and fall asleep. Never had that problem with Lyrica. Now I know why! I'm glad to read you have a good sponsor willing to help you deal with the issues you may come across in NA. That will help you keep your recovery strong |
