Teachers' Rules for NY School Teachers in 1915

1.Every week you must sweep and scrub the classroom floor.

2. You cannot marry during the term of the contract.

3.You can only travel in a carriage or automobile with your father or your brother.

4. You may not loiter down at the ice cream stores.

5. You have to wear two petticoats or more.

6. You are not permitted to smoke.

7. You may not dress in bright colors.

8. You may not keep company with men.

9. You must be home between the hours of 8PM and 6AM unless attending a school function.

10. You are not allowed to dye your hair.

11. The dresses you wear must not be shorter than two inches above your ankle.

12. You cannot travel beyond city limits you must have the permission of the Chairman of the Board.

Hmmm......well, I'll bet they didn't have gun threats, riots and daily fires in the bathrooms!

That one isn't that old. At my high school teachers married to teachers weren't allowed to work under the same contract in the same district, so two teachers at my school married in secret. They both helped out with ski club. One of the kids from ski club picked up the pictures of a ski trip from the film developer, and was shocked to find pics of Mr. Hansen and Miss McCoy in their jammies opening presents together on Christmas morning. It was scandalous.
