Still have difficulty breathing after 3 weeks

I quit smoking for 5 years after 32 years of smoking, then found an excuse to start again. Have smoked this time for almost 2 years. Now I have been smober for 3 weeks. I hope the almost gasping for breath is normal and not emphysema.
I don't remember doing this the last time I quit. Feels like my lungs just can't get enough air. Seems like every fifth or sixth breath I take normally I have to inhale very deeply, sometimes have to yawn to catch the deep breath. Is this normal??

Sass;
First of all, WELCOME to SR!
Now, I cannot tell you if it's normal or not. I have the start of COPD, and have the same problem catching my breath occassionally. I know my capacity is down, because I sing, and it's effected. I've been quit almost 3 months now...and I smoked for 36 years.
Talk to your doctor. But, the good news is, I've caught my problem on time. There's still the opportunity for my lungs to heal themselves with time. At the very least, they won't get worse...

Keep the quit and post before you puff!

Shalom!

Thanks, Teach. I am really afraid to see my physician for fear it will be emphysema. My Mom died at 69 with the disease and I know there's nothing that can be done for emphysema. Is there a way to tell if it's COPD?

Your doctor will be able to tell you; it was my doc who warned me that I had the beginnings of it.
Please don't be afraid. Knowledge is POWER!
And, for me, it's a real incentive not to pick up again!
I am sorry about your mom.

Shalom!
