| Who's game?
I quit smoking earlier this year, was doing fine until I found myself in an extremely stressful situation and unfortunately started smoking again. I'm wanting to quit again and have read several messages on the forum over the last few days from others who want to quit, but don't know how to go about it, or how to get themselves psyched up for it. I have a list of 56 daily messages that get you to quit day on day-21, and continue each day thereafter up to the five-week smoke-free point. These messages are from Health Canada's Go Smoke Free Program and are very helpful - you could say it's a way of being walked through the process. For me, my nicotine addiction is as bad as any drug addiction I've had in the past. I've been smoking for 30 years and to be honest the thought of quitting is very scary. I know that, like other addictions - be it drugs, alcohol, food, you name it - if I don't find a way to stop then I'm going to die from it. I don't want to die from something that was preventable - I want to live. If anyone is interested I'd be happy to post these messages on a daily basis, and I will commit my quit day to day-21 after the first message is posted. Maybe there are some other nicotine addicts out there who'd like to join me and we can do this together. Although we don't know each other personally, I'm willing to bet that two or more members doing this together will be a great support system, and support is so important when it comes to dealing with our addictions. So let me know your thoughts and let's see where we can go with this. Hugs!

I'm game. I have actually stopped cigs for a year and four months but am totally hooked on the Nicorette chewing gum. It's in my mouth from morning to night. I am going into a rehab unit on Oct 10th for my other addications. I have been going to weekly meetings at the centre from the end of July and have noticed many of the people there having a smoke outside. I am really nervous I am going to crack and want an actual cigarette. In fact I have been gasping for a pack for ages now. I nursed boths my parents to their deaths through smoking related illnesses. They both had Emphsema (not sure of spelling) It was so sad to see them smoke in between their oxygen intakes. I did stop before for over two years and started again. So like all addications I guess it really is a day at a time. I am definitelly hooked on the nicotene through the chewing gum.

Nogard - that is awesome - well done! Please keep us updated on your progress. Have you looked through the Nicotine Power Post links at the top of this forum? You may find some helpful info there. Best of luck to you, and I'll be following in your footsteps soon!

I look forward to the posts even though I quit 5 weeks ago. I have have had long stretches of quit time, the longest being 18 years. So, this time I am approaching it like I do my sobriety, one day at a time. I will work on not becoming over confident, thinking I have this licked. Asking for HP help and using the steps is really helping. Good luck to all fellow quitters. I'm so glad you are all here. Patty |
