| starting the patch on friday!!!
I have bought nicotine patches and will be starting them on Friday. My husband is a drug addcit and will be leaving for rehab on thursday. So I only have to deal with being around other smokers at work. I have tried zyban before but it caused severe insomnia so that's not a choice for me. Any adivce would be appreciated Roxy

Hi Roxy! Congratulations on your decision to quit smoking! It sounds like you're choosing a good time to quit, hopefully less stressful where you will be able to concentrate on yourself. I quit smoking on March 10 with the patch, smoked again for a couple of days at the beginning of April, and have been quit again since then. I was a smoker for over 30 years, often smoking up to two packs a day, and never thought I'd be able to stop. Picking up cigarettes again was a choice I made and not anything to do with the patch - I was under the delusion that I could control my smoking (what a joke!) but quickly found out that I could not. I put the patch back on and started with the 21 mg patch and am now on the 14 mg. I hope to be on the 7 mg patch in about a week. It can be left on at night, although I had very vivid dreams when I did so I take it off now a couple of hours before I go to bed. It's common to get itchy under the patch for the first hour or two when it goes on, but it should disappear after that. Be sure to read the patient information pamphlet in the box before you start using it so you are aware of the possible adverse effect. I did talk to my doctor about it beforehand and he was in favour of whatever worked - you may want to talk to yours first too, especially if you have any health problems. There's lots of different methods to quitting smoking, and I've tried to quit before using cold turkey and hypnosis, but never managed to stay quit. The patch seems to be working okay so far for me - other ways work successfully for other people. The real key to success is a genuine desire to quit, just like any other addiction, and if your willingness is there then you've already ahead of the game. Hang in there, Roxy - most people, myself included, will tell you that it's easier than we think it's going to be. It is hard, but can be done. Good luck, and keep us posted!

Hi Margo, I have also tried hypnosis, I went to the romane seminar about 2 months ago and I listen to his cd's everynight and I'm still smoking.(i'm guessing you know who he is, since your from canada?) It's so frustrating. My Husband is not going to rehab until monday now because he slipped. I am really stressed and confused right now but I am going to go ahead with the patch anyway. I am telling myself that if I use this as an excuse that I will always find an excuse. Thanks for the support I will keep you posted Roxy

Two drunks are driving down the highway, drinking their beer. All of a sudden the driver notices lights flashing in his mirror; the cops are on his tail. His buddy says, "What are we going to do?" The driver says, "Don't worry. Just do exactly what I tell you and everything will work out perfectly. First, peel the labels off our beer bottles and we'll each stick one on our forehead. Then shove the bottles underneath the seat, and let me do the talking." They pull over and the cop walks up to the car. He looks at them kind of funny, but asks to see the guy's driver's license. And he asks him, "Have you been drinking?" "Oh, no, sir," the driver replies. "I noticed you weaving back and forth across the highway. Are you *sure* you haven't been drinking?" the cop asks. "Oh, no, sir," the drunk answers. "We haven't had a thing to drink tonight." "Well, I've got to ask you," says the cop, "What on earth are those things on your forehead?" "That's easy, Officer," says the drunk. "You see, we're both alcoholics, and we're on the Patch!"

Mutter mutter ..about that patch..*whatever* works for you is worth it. I spent 50 bucks on them.. they don't seem to work for me. One morning the darn thing fell off my arm and onto the floor. (GASP that expensive little bugger) so I picked it up and dropped it in my bra, safely under a strap.. and then spend all day fretting about getting breast cancer. Walk, Water, gum and prayer.. |

hi roxy, i gave up smoking last november, i used nicotine patches and found them to work very well, i have not touched a single cigarette since! i have given up smoking about 7 times in the last ten years, but i feel this time it feels right. i have been through so much stress since my arrest and being in recovery for the last three months, i have not been tempted even once. i believe the key to quiting is actually wanting to, for yourself, not for others. when i quit i was quite short of money, so i just kept buying the largest size patch and when i was ready to step down i would just cut them down to a suitable size, near the end i was cutting them up into 8ths, a big saving! good luck, it's worth it! brad |
