WOW! <This is how I feel right now. I have not had a cigarette for 5 DAYS! 5 whole days without a cigarette! YAY for me!! But I feel so terribly sad inside.I mean this feels worse than getting sober. This feels harder to do than staying clean! Wow. I want to be mean to everyone around me. I want to yell at everyone. I have been a smoker for 22 years, so I know I definitely have a strong habit going for me. But I want to quit sooooooo bad, and stay quit! I refuse to pick up a cigarette no matter what... but when will this terrible jones'n feeling go away even alittle bit? I feel like my brain is so obsessed to smoke that its all I think about no matter how busy I keep myself. I am using nicotine patches...... I am not a sleeper... so I can not sleep it away, I am very anxious. Also I have been subbing with lots of food ( I am skinny, so I can afford the weight) If anyone has any advise for me to help me to get my thinking off of smoking even just for 5 minutes, please help me!!!!! I just want to know how or when I will start to feel OK with all this! Thank you for reading this.

Hi Kerry, Congrats on 5 days smoke free. You must be so proud of yourself. I smoked for over 30 years and have just celebrated 6 months smoke free. Believe me it gets easier. Keep reminding yourself why you stopped. Make a list. My list included. Smokers cough. Breathlessness. Risk of cancer or heart disease. I stank. My house stank. My family exposed to second hand smoke. Feeling like I had a ball and chain on. The expense....money going up in smoke! Bad influence on my grandson. Being unable to run round the park with my grandson. Feeling like a leper as it's becoming more and more socially unacceptable.....and so on. Keep referring to your list. Make another list of all the benefits and experience more and more of these benefits as the days go by. Sit quietly and think of what you are feeling. Now I know it can feel horrible and the more you dwell on it the more horrible it will feel. But can you feel any pain....no! It's a feeling (not a very good feeling at times I know) but the feeling will pass.....it won't kill you, smoking probably will! Now get up and keep busy, all the while thinking of the great gift you are giving yourself by stopping smoking! I would also suggest you post on the daily check in thread like I did on a daily basis. This was a great help for me, I got loads of support and encouragement from other members. Keep positive and don't allow those negative thoughts to crowd your mind and you'll be fine. |

Hey kid grats on trying to be healthy on your body. The first few days were hard for me cause, I'd smoke more at home on the computer. Stay active with your hands. I have idle time, I want to smoke.

I chewed tobacco for 27 years, I've been freed of that bondage for 5 years now, you can do this. I found lots of useful info on this site WhyQuit - the Internet's leading cold turkey quit smoking resource Like everyone's suggested, stay as busy and active as possible, it still helps me to keep my mind and body occupied. Nibble on healthy snacks, chew gum, sunflower seeds, etc. and get as much exercise as possible, even if it's just easy walks or slow bike rides. Once I started feeling healthier I didn't ever want to use tobacco again, I was too happy with the new me.

Way to go on your nicotine-free time Kerry! Honestly, I still have cravings for chewing tobacco, much worse than any craving for alcohol. It was an oral fixation, I associated chewing with just about everything I did in my life. Those cravings pass quickly, it does get better!

Hang in there KERRYZZME, it will get easier with time & you are already past the worst part. At five days you are just about at the stage where you are wanting one out of habit rather than "needing" one to feed your nicotine addiction. I think at five days I was still reaching over to where I usually kept my pack of butts out of habit. I felt kind of "empty" without a cigarette. I suggest you go over to whyquit.com & look at the "what to expect" and the "your guide to glory week" sections. It really lays out exactly what to expect, I experienced everthing they mention right about when they said I would. Right now the circulation in my gums & teeth are returning to normal & it feels fabulous just knowing it! Oh, I felt "bored" at times without a cigarettee. You just have to remember that smoking is NOT AN ACTIVITY- it is a habit. You aren't "doing" anything when you smoke. |
