| Two Years
I started this smoke free journey a bit over two years ago. I have been a smoker all my life. I say that because almost all the adults around me as child smoked, and there were no restrictions as to where a person could light up. I recall waking up after my tonsils were removed when I was in the 2nd grade and my mother sitting next to me smoking a Camel. I started smoking firsthand over 40 years ago and it progressed to a constant 2-3 packs a day, plus a lot of grass and cigars along the way. I have been sober for over 20 years, so intellectually I understood much about addiction and also understood I needed some tools to help me work through this. The N.P. at my doctor's office provided me with some basic counseling and 'script for Chantix. I also found this site. The most important tool was that lump of gray matter between my ears and within that space was a simple and strong desire to be a non-smoker. Somehow, with the things listed above, lots of water to drink and accepting the changes my body was going through as well as the changes my mind went through, with the attitude swings, and the crabbyness, and mourning the loss of my "best friend nicotine" and talking to people, and drinking water, eating snacks, accepting coffee did not taste good for a while and pepper was too strong, etc, etc, etc. Here I stand before everyone, simply another person that had a 600 pound gorilla on my back, like most of us here, and I can say that if you want to become a non-smoker, you can become a non-smoker. Being a non-smoker is a much more positive attitude then being an ex-smoker. if you really want a smoke free life, put away the toys and reach out and grab it, and ask for help if it seems out of reach. I have been quit for 2 Years, 3 Days, 2 hours, 47 minutes and 6 seconds (734 days). I have saved $5,285.63 by not smoking 29,364 cigarettes. I have saved 3 Months, 1 Week, 2 Days and 23 hours of my life. My Quit Date: 9/23/2007 8:34 PM
