| Six months a non-smoker!
Been through quite a bit in that time, I've relapsed on alcohol several times, broke up with my girlfriend and sold my townhome, been on a road trip, and the whole time without a cigarette. Don't even consider them an option anymore, I am very grateful that I quit.

That's great!!! I'm coming up on 2 months, soon, and smoking is just a vague memory...absolutely amazing, isn't it? Hugs and prayers! Amy

Way to go Steamvessel!! Six months is fantastic and I am sure you body appreciates being free from all the toxins. Your posts have been helpful to me and I appreciate your stopping in periodically. I did not even plan to quit but got motivated reading the posts here and quit 68 days ago. I am an alcoholic and after I got sober I thought having some cigarettes with my sober friends was no big deal. My perception has changed entirely as I am noticing people dying from cigarettes within AA. Cigarettes are a profoundly effective killer often overlooked by recovering alcoholics. Good luck with your struggles with alcohol. You are a smart motivated person and I am sure you will win that battle also. Take Care! |

| Jeff, I'm sure that golden voice of yours appreciates it even more. I'm not much of a singer but I can probably hum along with the radio much better without a mouthful of chew and spit! Congrats on 6 months of freedom from nicotine, and thank you for sharing your sobriety with our group too!

Thanks all. I really can't understate the importance of stopping smoking, it's like if you were in a video game and you are down to one and a half hearts and all of a sudden you pick up one of those packs that gives you full life support. That's the best analogy I can think of right now. I feel like even if I am not in great physical shape, getting into shape isn't that big of a burden when I'm not smoking, because I don't have something blocking me physically and emotionally from being there. For me, I have to maintain some sort of physical shape/stamina in order to be happy.

You speak about making it through a roadtrip (as well as other milestones) Personally I just came back from a 3 week road trip across the U.S, without a cigarette. It is not even a option I consider anymore (unless of course I wish to become a slave to nicotine and the cigarette companies again while reeking a putrid odor, being a social outcast and dooming myself to die a slow painful agonizing death by a largely preventable most deadly cancer) I have been nicotine free for over 9 months now. If I really understood that the thought of quitting is much harder then it it really is, I would have done it allot sooner after being a smoker for 16 years. Nicotine detox occurs after 72hours, Nicotine craves aka "nic fits" last on average for 3 minutes with a peak of about 7 craves per day for the first 3 days. No big deal! Get a watch to make it through the 3 minute craves since nicotine distorts the minds perception of time, lower caffeine and alcohol intake initially (or in my case completely) and freedom will come faster then you realize. | |
