I quit

Hi all, just thought I would check out this section of SR. I have been thinking about quitting again for a while, I kept making dates and then not following through, but on Sunday I decided enough was enough and had my last one at 10pm. So it's been nearly 48 hours so far and it's not been to bad.

Welcome!

Welcome! to the slowest forum here...

And I do not mean that in a bad way. It seems when people quit the really bad stuff then the final one is smoking.

(warning, this one is the baddest! If you can quit smoking the rest are easy!)

Thanks Possum,

Day 3 today, I just went cold turkey so the nic is nearly out of my system, then it gets easier I think. I have tried quitting a few (say about 100) times in the past, mostly they lasted from the time I woke up to the time I could get to the store lol.

I figured since I have quit drinking now I can probably do the smoking too, before I would usually end up having a ciggie after I had had to much to drink, in fact the last time I went 3 days without one, I woke up to find I had got some from somewhere whilst in a black out, no idea where they came from

Suprisingly it has been quite easy so far, not sure why, but I am not complaining

Jigolife - I'm normally gnawing my arm on day 3 (how do people quote two different peeps?)

I know, like you say day three is normally really really hard, maybe I am just ready this time, I dunno, it hasn't been half as bad as I thought it would be. Apart from getting dizzy from all the new oxygen I am getting I haven't really had that much of a problem at all so far, but it's early days still.

One thing that is great is today I can smell again, you wouldn't believe how much smoking destroys your sense of smell. My house stinks and I didn't even smoke inside, I couldn't smell it before I quit but urgggg lol. I have been going around all day burning scented candles and lighting oils trying to make it smell better.

My goodness!

You guys are from England?

Do you really say stuff like Cheeri-o and all that?

does smoking have the same connoitations to it there as it does here- like when you smoke you're a complete pariah?

I feel like there's an opportunity here to learn, if it annoys you tell me to bug off (or they say p*ss off a lot in the movies I've seen)

I'm pretty ignorant

LOL Chippa you made me chuckle.

I say Cheerio occasionally didn't realise it was just an english saying but I guess so, from what you say

Yeah smoking is seen pretty much the same here I would say, well where I live anyway. I hardly ever smoked anywhere except my garden in the end as I was just getting embarrassed smoking in public.

Ask anything you want, I will do my best to answer, if you start to annoy me yeah I would tell you to P*ss off LOL

Well done Sax, if it helps, this morning cig I'm smoking is actually painful.

Hi Chippa and greetings to 'The Colonies'

Been saying cheerio! quite a bit since I found SR. Ta Ta! is another colloquial goodbye. Guess I'm playing up to my rakish British accent, chicks dig it!

The smoking ban in public enclosed places came into force last June and has been a contributory factor in the closure of many traditional Olde English Pubs ( increasingly cheap booze at the supermarkets being another). I'm worn out with the pariah thing, railway station platforms have been my major bugbear, having to stand right at the end with the trainspotters, hand cupped slyly over my f@g, (an innocent slang word for cigarette that raises eyebrows across the pond ) glowering, challengingly at passersby. The worst part being when you get busted by a cctv camera and a station announcement pinpoints you like something out of 1984.

LOL that made me chuckle.

Day 6 today, suprisingly this week hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be but I am glad it is nearly over. I read on another site that withdrawal takes about 2 weeks, I think that is if you go CT thought, I would imagine it is going to be different if NRT's are used? Anyway week one is the worst for withdrawals, so it can only get better as long as I don't smoke another one.

The hardest part was when my niece tuned up unexpected. She smokes so I immediately started craving slightly, I hadn't been anywhere near ciggies all week but now they were in my house! She stayed for two days and I didn't ask her once for one, so I am kinda proud of myself for that, since it was so early in my quit, I hadn't banked on being around smokers so soon.

I feel like I am talking to myself when I post on here, I did think about not bothering but I can see people are reading it so I figured I might as well carry on just in case it helps anybody out there.

Well I had my last ciggie a week ago today and it hasn't been to bad at all really, well until today! I have done nothing but think about cigarette's today nothing seemed to take my mind off it. I have been irritable, cranky and tearfull. I went to visit my dad to try and take my mind off it, we are not really that close but I go visit him occasionally. Anyway for some reason he asked if I was still smoking so I was happy to report to him that in fact I had quit a week ago. He said if I could get through the next week it would be a lot easier after that. (He quit about 5 years ago) He then went on to tell me one of his brothers has been diagnosed with lung and liver cancer, well that kinda helped me ignore the craves. One of my reasons for not quitting in the past is the fact that "my family don't get cancer" but there you go, it seems we do, it could just have easily been my dad or me in the future I guess.

I will not quit quitting.

Hey Sax! Good job..quitting is hard...I smoked my last cig on June 29th. I admit I was afraid to quit smoking...many people said it would be more difficult given my alcohol addiction....NOT TRUE!!! It is hard, but so is getting off the bottle. Keep up the good work! Your lungs will thank you.

btw I started running...ok jogging...a week after I quit smoking...as of this morning I can now jog for 45 minutes without stopping...if that ain't a miracle I don't know what is!

Day 9 and it's been quite a hard one! I have been craving alot today but also I have been craving drink as well so I don't think that has helped. At one point I was just going to give up and buy smokes and drinks and say F it. But at the moment I am at home and still sober and still smoke free, I could go bed in about 3 hours so I think an early night is in order and hopefully tommorow will be better.

Wow, I downloaded a little gadget thing when I first quit smoking and it has little stats on it, well I just checked it and it says that I have saved £46.90 allready! Thats nearly £50 in 10 days, I can't believe I spent so much, well I mean I knew it cost alot but to see that I have saved £50 in such a small ammount of time seems unreal.

Oh it also says I have not smoked 191 ciggies and saved 1 day and 11 hours of my life

OMG- I can't believe I didn't bring up the word F*G

Sax- good work man, Jolly good

How much is a pack of smokes across the pond- my wife is now paying well over SEVEN DOLLARS a pack!!!

That's almost 2 gallons worth of petrol!

I remember a little bit about the time period you're in now and I'll tell you for the most part I just did the mindless stuff when I wasn't at work- watched a lot of 'telly' (that's TV right, not the phone?) played video games with my kids and slept a ton- I was always tired

Keep posting here- I was addicted to typing stuff on the internet for a looog time after I quit (I guess I'm still addicted)

OK with the smokiing talk over, HERE'S my real question (for today anyways) about England- I think the real big stereotype (or the one that bothers me most n my fickle head) is that the cuisine over where you are is lousy- or if not lousy, not 'glamorous' or exotic I guess like Italian, French, Indian, Chinese- all those things have a 'mystique' I guess-

I find it hard to believe that a place as big as England would tolerate lousy food all the time-

don't get me wrong, here in America we've got our disasters too, but I think we have some things to be proud of- the barbecue down south, the cajun stuff (I lived in New Orleans for a while) I think we may have started the shaved steak and cheese sandwich- I'll think of more

They had 'bangers' I believe in the grocery around here frozen a few years ago and I got them (how can sausage not be good) and I was not impressed, but that's the 'bastardized' American version I assume...

You guys big on 'pot pies' and such? That seems like it might be English..

also I used to watch a show called the 'two fat ladies' which I really liked, are they (I know one of them is dead) were they big over there?

Sidebar-I watch football and fighting and all that, trust me I'm a regular man's man, I'm just also a big fan of food

I won't rehash the apologies again after this, but I want to emphasize- I hope you don't think I'm making fun of your culture or anything, I really am curious

British Food...

British Food is the BEST in the world.

The reason? Britain ruled the world!

As a result the quisine and culture of the British peoples is the most diverse on this planet.

The "bad food" is a myth.

Just as the "warm beer" is a myth ( light coloured beers that have little taste are served ice cold in England, the darker beers are served slightly warmer)

Think wine... why are white wines in America served chilled and Reds served room temperature? (and why the @#$%& do a lot of Americans ask for a glass of ice with their red wine and dump cubes in it?)

Same as bad teeth, Americans laugh at the British and say "they have bad teeth" You ever been to a Willie Nelson Concert?

I could go on and on and ramble all night and while my hands are busy I am not reaching for a fag.

In fact the last time I had a fag was exactly four weeks ago.

Well it's day 11 today and I am doing ok, no craves yesterday which was great

British Food huh, I don't know if I am the best person to ask about that really. I don't have anything to compare it to as I have never left England. I am also a terrible cook but I don't have any complaints with what I do eat. Can't beat a good old Sunday Roast.

How much are ciggies here now? My favorite ciggies were going for about £5.50 a pack but I had gone down to a cheaper brand which were £4.80 so way to much money that I am glad I am not spending anymore.

Football, there is something, your football and my football are completely different games. I mean American Football, why do they call it football when they use their hands half the time?

Possum, congratulations on 4 weeks thats brilliant

Ummmm....

I left England....

Smokes and beer were too much. It was cheaper to buy 5 acres of land here for, and now I am going to upset the Brits I left behind, for 20,000 quid!

That 20,000 got me a nice 2 bedroom house, two barns, a pig shed and a chickin shed,

Also it got me no running water (I have a well!) and a skunk problem!

I ran away from my hard alchohol addiction, I ran 5000 miles, now I ONLY drink Bud Lite.

I was 60 a day smoking, and I quit that, now, I like beer, the next problem is...

How the fluck do you get a family of skunks outa the barn!
