to quit smoking. I will be quitting on my one year anniversary in recovery, Feb 21. My plan? To smoke as much as I can until then ha ha. No seriously, something that I HAVE to do. Not really sure if I want to. I'm extremely worried about gaining weight. Should I treat this like quitting the booze? Work the 12 steps around it? Cold turkey? Does exercise help? I have visions of becoming very fit as a way to get through it. What is the detox like? I've quit before, for short periods and the mood swings were hard to deal with. Any thoughts are appreciated! Karen

Karen - I was going to do the same thing....quit on my one year clean anniversary (Mar 9). But, I need money now and it doesn't make sense spending over $90/month on cigarettes. I had bought a carton xmas eve night and have 1-1/2 packs left. Am planning to quit when they are gone. I'm going to do the cold-turkey thing....I've quit smoking for 3-4 years at a time that way, and was stupid enough to start back. I'm worried about gaining weight, too, but will just have to deal with it. I think I'm going to buy some of those peppermit candies....a friend quit smoking and the only thing he used was the candies...not good for the teeth, but not as much calories as other things. My dad did the gum, then the patches and he quit from a 4-pack-a-day habit. Of course, he's as big as a house now, so don't want that to happen. He's also one of those "reformed smokers" and is quite a pain. I don't even plan to tell him I've quit until several days after I do. Hopefully, this year will be our year to be free of addictive substances!! Hugs and prayers! Amy
