Trying to quit another addiction

I highly doubt anyone remembers me on this site. I used to read this site daily and come here for help with my heroin addiction awhile back. I'm happy to say that I've been clean from heroin for over 3 years.
Now I'm trying to get over this terrible addiction of nicotine. It's scary how this legal substance is just about as addictive and difficult to quit as hard illegal drugs.
I have been trying all this year to quit, going back and forth between patches and smoking. I am trying to get a prescription for chantix since I've heard so many good things about it.
I am just sick of making it a couple months without smoking just to get a terrible craving that will not subside until I go down to the cornerstore and buy a pack of smokes.
Any advice is appreciated. I bought myself more patches (I've been smoking off and on the past 2 weeks after being smoke-free for 6 weeks) and plan to slap one of those babies on tomorrow evening. Hoping to have the Chantix within the next few days so I can start that up. It's just so easy after a few weeks of not smoking to forget that you can't have just one cigarette.

hey
congrats on the 3 years clean time - I started on patches AGAIN on friday, on day three, so we'll be at a similar point and can support each other if you fancy that.

I've been trying to remember what goes through my head when I've had "just one" before and work up strategies to confront it before I light up.

Plus you've beaten an addiction already, any tips you can share from that?

good luck to both of us.

Been out of town and haven't had a chance to check in. I haven't had a cigarette since Sunday. Started takign the Chantix on Monday and have been feeling pretty nauseated from it, but am going to try to keep on taking it.

Well, the Chantix has been making me pretty nauseated, so I cut back on my dose and it's helped. I stopped wearing patches yesterday, and so far so good. Haven't had many cravings and the withdrawals are pretty much non-existent.
I just wish I'd get over this cold that I've had for the past couple of weeks! Being sick while quitting smoking and dealing with the first week of classes at college is stressing me out.

My cold is clearing up, so glad!
I haven't smoked a cigarette in almost 2 weeks. It's been 4 days since I've had nicotine, so I would usually be at the worst of withdrawals, but this Chantix is making this too easy. I'm not suffering any nausea after reducing my dose to .5 mgs twice daily. I'm not having any trouble sleeping, very little irritability, very few cravings. And for once, I'm not feeling a heavy depression from lack of nicotine!
I've also been using a homeopathic kit I picked up at whole foods. It's called Stop-It Smoking (nicotine free). I'm usually not one to believe homeopathic meds to be effective, but the herbal lozenges seem to help when I'm having a craving.
