Famous People
Hello there and welcome to SR!
An oldie but a good one.
I do see Dylan Thomas there and as far as i know, sorta drank himself to death.
His last words were like "i believe that is a record" - talking about the amount of
whiskey he have just drunk on the pub he was leaving right after he died?
Also i see Stevie Ray Vaughan and he is just a case of pure and sheer bad luck.
He gets clean and sober - next thing you know he goes up in a plane to play a concert.
Plane crashes and he dies. One way or another, we are all bound to the end.
The Kevin Smith piece on Jason Mewes is excellent, thanks for posting that one!
Best of success to everyone on this thread!

However, we tend to have a cult of personality in this world, which I think can be dangerous. As a professor of mine used to say, when you have heroes, you diminish yourself. All the famous people are only human too, no more or less worthy of happiness and health in this life than you or I.

Is Mel Gibson off this list?
I think it would be great to get a complete new list.
For example, I recently heard that James Franco does not drink at all either (his rep commented in this past week's Entertainment Weekly regarding his dazed look at the Oscars)

Just saw her on the Today Show talking her alcoholism. Very enlightening.
I think a few of those on that list drink again...Drew Barrymore, Ben Affleck

My first impressions of a female addict/alcoholic in the public eye were Elizabeth Taylor and Betty Ford. What Betty Ford did seemed revolutionary for women suffering from alcoholism, back in those days it was often a big hidden problem, and people had very stereotypical views of alcoholism which I think she helped to break.
The very definition of cool... Johnny Marr.
"I used to drink in my early 20′s and it was just part of being a rock ‘n’ roller – crashing a car, being in a great band, wearing sunglasses indoors. But then I just fancied trying life without it. If I’m having a good time with someone, staying up ’till five in the morning and they’re drinking, bring it on. But as soon as someone starts saying the same **** to me five times, I’m out of there. I doubt I’d be doing a lot of the stuff I do if I was hungover. And I’m never bored. That’s what books are for and writing songs and seeing the world."-- Marr
