Famous People
Okay guys,
Political views aside please!
The purpose of this thread was to point out people in the public eye who were living sober lives and showing the world that addicts can lean successful, productive lives.

Thank you everybody for the responses. I find it facinating. In response to one question I think that this list should include people who have had a problem and those who never touch the stuff. As it says in the big book some people are born alcoholic and never take a drink. Thanks again.
I didn't drink yesterday, I didn't drink today, and won't drink tomorrow!

Anne Robinson - journalist/ presenter/ quiz mistress! (The Weakest Link)
Frank Skinner - comedian
Tara Parker Tomilinson - 'IT girl'
I bet I could think of loads more, given time!
Have a great and sober weekend everyone!

Nicki Six -- Motley Crue
Billy Joel -- who admittedly quit on his own.
Alice Cooper -- who says he is "no longer" an alcoholic
Metallica -- formerly know as "alcoholica"
CC Deville (Poison) -- sobered up on "The Surreal Life" on VH1
Joe Walsh of the Eagles
Can't think of many more right now....

I appreciate that some in the public eye are able to encourage others through their recovery from addictions, however I'm always a bit concerned that, should one relapse (which so many do), this might send a message to a struggling alcoholic/addict that "recovery must not work so I might as well keep drinking/drugging".
My hat (were I wearing one) goes off to the millions of anonymous people worldwide who, while never getting any public accolades for getting/staying sober, manage to assist and inspire countless others who struggle for sobriety on a daily basis.

Carrie Fisher - Actress
Drew Barrymore - Actress
The actress who was in The Golden Girls (the 'tall one with the deep voice!! Elaine someone??!!)
Michael Barrymore - Comedian
Sure that there are loads more! It must be hard to admit and quit when you are so much in the public eye, but yes, full respect to all the everyday folk who manage to quit because god knows its hard for them (us) too, and there are other worries like money and jobs etc which the stars dont have so much.

this thread is cool. i used the same rationale when i was diagnosed with agoraphobia. i had to see if famous people had it, because i couldnt find anyone else in 'real life' that had it.
i wished there was a support group at the time, but well...if everyone is afraid to leave their houses...well you can see where im going with this

Ozzy Osborne.
He was in Texas once for a concert and his wife stole his clothes so he couldn't go out drinking. So he put on one of her dresses and went out to get drunk anyway. He was arrested in San Antonio wearing a dress, for public drunkenness and peeing on the Alamo. Probably not one of his prouder moments!

The thing about AA in theory is that it is supposed to be anonymous. The fact that famous names can not be rattled off like those in a year book is a good thing. A person should be able to walk into the rooms without anybody knowing their business unless they choose to dislose that information.
Good luck at your first meeting.

3 off the top of my head:
Dave Navarro - red hot chili peppers
Robert Parrish - basketball player (I don't think Robert was an alkie but he quit because he wanted to have a long, productive career, which he did)
Chris Mullin - basketball player (an admitted alkie)

Hi
I made this post a few months ago. Even though a few of the people on the list have fallen. Without condoning what they said I would like to point out a line from the fantastic book Under the Influence
By Dr. James R. Milham and Katherine Ketcham (page 13 of the 23 ed of the paperback) in the section called "Every Human Soul" it states
"Myth: When the Alcoholic is drinking, he reveals his true identity. Reality: Alcohol's effect on the brain causes severe psychological and emotional distortions of the normal personality. Sobriety reveals the alcoholic's true personality.
I would like to point out that no matter how much money we have or how successful we are it is still possible to slip. Also to understand that a slip is more than a day or two, a slip can last for months or years. That in our situation a slip is not a measure of time but our sobriety is. I can tell you how long I was sober for the last time but I cannot tell you with any degree of precision how long I have been drinking. I love myself when I am sober; I love myself less when I drink. We'll fight these battles tomorrow and then next day an if we are fighting them the day after that then we are doing something right.
Good luck to all that have slipped and thank you to all that hasn't.
I do have a quick question, I know how to fight alcoholism but could someone point me to a thread or give me some advise on how to get help with depression? Thank you again.
