after 15 years....
Hi all,
I've been a drinker shortly after my 1st overseas assignment (military) due to peer pressure and the military culture that encourages drinking. However, after my first tour in Iraq I came back a different person and resorted to vodka instead of beer to quell my anxieties. In the past month I hit rock bottom (as cliche as it is) and decided I needed help. I sought professional help which my current unit arranged but also tried to discharge me (which the psychiatrist actually tipped me off about). Anyways, I digress. I am on my 5th day of not drinking and already starting to feel less anxious and more confident. I have been reading a few posts on here and they have helped me cope with cravings that I have had. Glad I'm here with an on-line community that knows what I'm going through.

Welcome irishheir, and thank you for serving!
It's amazing how the anxiety lessens. I drank to cope with stress - not realizing I was making it impossible to deal with life in a normal way. Congratulations on your 5 sober days - I hope you'll keep talking to us. It really does help to share our thoughts with those who get it. Be proud of yourself for reclaiming your life and reaching out for something better. You can do this.
