Newly trying

Hello,

I am new here. I'm trying to stay sober but I only manage a few days at a time. I am in love with the love of my life so I am trying to get sober to reach my potential and be a healthier happier me for us. She is super understanding and she said she doesnt care how many times i relapse as long as I try. I'm just wondering what you guys do when you're alone in the night and can't fight the urge to drink.

Thanks.

I read on here, eat something usually sweet or call someone to talk. Reading and music can also help. Anything that can help distract you from the urges so that you can get another sober day until it gets easier and the cravings subside.

Nice to meet you Patrick. My go to during the rough times is SR. When times are tough I read the " stories of recovery" forum. There are so many stories about people just like us that beat alcoholism. It gives me so much hope. You can do this .

I used that time to educate myself. It worked for me.

I looked into:
Addiction
Overcoming addiction
Alcoholism
Tips and tricks for fighting urges
Long term impact of alcohol
How the brain for addicts is wired
Supplements that would help me recover

SR has a ton of info. There's probably a lifetime worth of YouTube videos. I also downloaded a few books.

I looked at it like I wanted to be the master instead of the slave.

I also hit a few AA meetings. Tuesday and Friday nights here on sr there's a meeting too that helped me big time.

And finally, rational recovery website is really good too. Very, very useful. Full of great skills you can use for the rest of your life! Stuff that will transform you.

Welcome Patrick...I read SR and research my disease...as they say, "knowledge is power". Another thing I do is read a good book. When I was drinking, I hardly ever read a book from cover to cover.

Glad you're here!

Such a good decision, and so glad you have a strong support in your partner. Alcohol is tough to beat, but we can do it together

If you haven't already, I always suggest seeing a doctor to make sure you cover all your bases. You may need vitamins to supplement your diet - I did. My whole system was super out of whack.

Best of luck to you - I know the support here as well as the knowledge and experience will help you

I meditate (Anapana Sita and Vipassana(I'm actually off on a ten day retreat in a couple of days )). I like that not just because it works. It is independent of the outer. Completely self dependent. I can be alone in a dungeon or surrounded in a palace. The sole objects of the meditation are within on the personal mind/body using no mantras or visualisations so it's universal. Good for anyone of any creed age or gender. So if I'm alone, in the dark, I always have that.
