Day 125 and 1 rewarding myself
Day 125 and 1 rewarding myself
I've been putting the money aside that I normally would spend on booze and boy does it add up, it was time to spend some.
My 8 yo Son got his boating license last weekend, I sat through the course with him and he did the test on his own passing with 86%, proud Dad moment for sure, boating has been such a big part of my life since I was born, did it every chance I could and ended up being a marine mechanic so it's only natural my son caught the boating bug too.
I still have the 14' Lund that I ran when I was kid, back then there was no rules and 25 hp was fine legally, it was a little fast tho, now from 8-12 years old are only allowed to run a 10hp and under, we had a left over 2016 9.9 with electric start at the dealership I work at for $2800 which I paid for from 4 months of not drinking, crazy to think how much $ I pissed down the toilet through the years.
Anyway we have spent the last week working on it every night after work, installed a battery, bilge pump, lights, and new swivel seats, put a safety kit, flares, paddles, anchor, he is 100% legal on the water if he gets pulled over, sanded the boat down and gave it two coats of fire red, she's looking pretty good for a 32 year old boat, it's so fun to get it ready for him, I probably spent 1000 hours in that thing when I was a kid, the last 15 years or so I just ran it a few times a year to keep the motor working fine.
Here's some pics, gonna be a great summer, can't wait to see him and his friends cruising like we did as kids.
The new 9.9 and the old 25 Yamaha, the Yamaha will go back on when he's 12, until then keeping it legal.
The test run before we did any work to the boat, 17.4 mph, not bad for a 9.9
New seats
Waiting for the first coat of paint to dry and testing the navigation lights.
I'm planning on finishing the boat today, have to take tape off and instal some fitting, new Lund decals and she's pretty much ready, he's lucky I'm not charging him by the hour, lol.

NICE! I grew up around boats as a kid too....learned to waterski at my parents summer cap when I was 8. What a blast!
Years later my xh and I had a 28ft Galaxy. He wouldn't let me ski off it because he said the gas was too expensive. Hmmm, one of the reasons he's now an x.
Sounds like you're doing well Sportdeck. Have a great day!

It's amazing how often I hear in meetings that someone in recovery has rediscovered an old hobby or recreational love since they quit drinking. Along the lines of boating, I revisited my love of the outdoors--hiking, nature...appreciation of the real gifts of this world!
