Tempted

This trip has been so hard for some reason. It's my last night in Germany and I want a drink so badly. I've avoided it but I'm sitting here in my room really being tempted by the minibar and a small bottle of wine in there.

All the normal AV stuff "just one drink" "no one will know" etc.

It's KILLING me. It's been going on for like 2 hours this time.

Are you with anyone in Germany? Can you get outside and walk around?

OnMyWay.....

I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling, and so glad you reached out before drinking.

I can understand the minibar being difficult to fight against.

You could call the front desk, and ask to send someone up to remove everything.

Are you able to ask the hotel staff to remove the contents of the mini-bar?

Right now I'm just sticking here reading posts and replies. I really don't want to drink - I really want to be happy not drinking - that's what I really want.

How long have you been sober Onmyway? I was stationed in Germany for 7 years and can relate to the minibar. Why not just call down and have them remove the alcohol and bring up more sodas?

I sure would not want to go through detox and then PAWS all over again. It is time to get out and take a walk. Germany is alcohol oriented, granted, but they have some great bakeries with wonderful snacks. And their fruit tarts and less sweet desserts are to die for. Coffee is strong there and they have Sprudel water too.

Being happy not drinking takes time, and if you have no other hobbies or interests because of drinking, it takes a bit of effort too. I have no desire to drink at all. I am not deprived, I survived alcoholism.

I'm a bit over 8 months sober - and I feel funny asking them to come up and take it away. Every time I order cranberry and tonic they always ask "what alcohol" and when I say none - they're like "none??" I don't like feeling damaged.

Reading posts about how others "just had one" and went back full time drinking helps also.

Things are so weird sometimes. I started packing - i'm going home tomorrow and I go into the bed drawer and I find "The Teaching of Buddha" in German and English... So I'm like what the heck - I start reading it- so this is my plan for tonight. Finish packing get into bed and read this book. Always wanted to know about Buddha.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I haven't had many really bad days but I've had a few ones this trip and feeling a bit sorry for myself doesn't help.

Thanks

Buddha and mindfulness. We are all about mindfulness here. Good alternative.

Post and let us know how you find the book.

Everyone provided some seriously insightful comments here. This forum is great. Good for you OnmyWay for getting through this. Posting here looks like it helped you defeat that very STroNg AV in your head, but it helps me too, because this kind of temptation can happen to any of us anytime and your experience serves as a good good reminder.

Hi everyone - successful night - in some ways I'm surprised I really had started talking myself into "just one" but by the time I got into bed with the Buddah book I was tired and only had to read for about 15 minutes and then fell asleep. Not sure what would have happened if I didn't have this place to go to.

Thanks Again
