Hopping on the part 3 train! I'm doing better after getting some additional sleep. Feeling OK all around except I bloated up a bit letting the food go this weekend. Off to work. Have good sober days, all!

I work in gov and i have already become a manager. My field of education is in the Operations field and gov HR has a rule that you can't go down pay levels. The only jobs here in Aus in this Ops area are gov jobs or in research which i will need my PhD.
If I actually sat down and planned my career instead of drinking, this would not have occurred.
Dee thanks for asking, this is one of the reasons i need to get sober or i will toil away my life in a boring job and come home to the bottle.

Mel: I am with you!!! I don't want to drink ever!
Arctic: 21 days is awesome!!!!!
Ento: Get your career planning on!
I'm still here, guys. I haven't been posting much due to work being so busy. But I still check in & I still ride on the weekend bus. Everyone of you are awesome & you help so much in more ways than one.

Hi Ento,
I am as we speak doing everything I can to cut a path from onerous to non-onerous job duties, so I can readily identify with your dilemma.
To be honest, making my transition is not objectively that hard, but it has felt "impossible" and my progress has been ******** due to drinking-using, mediocre mental health, and so on.
I wish you the best in realizing your vision of a better work situation.

Okay......back on
March has been very patchy, weekends I've been bad, weeks better. Just got to find a way of getting through the long dragging empty weekends. Last one I wrote a plan, even down to meals. But it didn't happen......Coming up is a three day weekend, so really need some ideas for doing it. Had for weeks back in Jan....but really just white knuckled the weekends.
It's not that I have nothing to do. Really the opposite....maybe too many projects and one really big one. Loneliness a big issue, a long term, long distance relationship has been pretty much disintegrating, so probably hasn't helped
So.....get back on today and it'd be a week for March with a couple of 4-5 day breaks.

Hello from a newbie
Hi everyone
i'm struggling to re-find my sobriety. Talked to the dr who basically told me to get a grip on things!
This is my fourth day sober.
Hope it's ok to join in with your group.

Thanks for explaining Ento - now I know it's Public Service it's clear to me lol.
Welcome wolfrunner
Welcome back canguy
For me a plan is not so much about keeping busy as it is staying sober.
Try and avoid situations where in the past you'd drink on weekends - or if they're unavoidable, mix up your routine as much as you can.
make sure you have support - people you can talk to, preferably both here and in the real world.
Use that support if you get into trouble and have an escape plan ready, have a plan for cravings, and be prepared...
if you plan every second of the weekend you're likely to be ambushed or surprised by something.
Keep the plan loose & flexible - be prepared for surprises.

Ento I'm in a very similar situation, completely different fields (I'm arts) but mostly gov jobs too unless I work in small private places (which pay much less and not too many good ones where I am)
I'm overqualified too unless I get my phd
So you're not alone there!

Also just general check in - feeling better than yesterday, using my day off to relax and get over this cold, snuggled up on the couch and don't plan on moving!
Can't help thinking how nice a drink would be especially remembering how I was always given whiskey for colds. Not acting on it though

For years I have been going to the gym and keeping track of my statistics. Amazingly, today I easily beat my previous records on several events, including the deadlift, which "does not lie" in revealing overall physical capacity. The trainer went nuts and wrote my name on the records board.
Being chemical-free I do not believe is the only reason I did well today. I think something is going on psychologically, related to recovery.
Of course, my statistics would immediately go into the toilet if I resumed any drinking or smoking. Further, such deterioration would be immediately noticed by the trainer and other regular members. I am glad those people are watching!

there are no small private jobs here unless i freelance but I would take a pay cut to do my dream job if that was an option.
First day at the new job went well. I didn't have the shakes, I wasn't hungover and I had no anxiety. I wasn't even nervous! Now if I could just relax with a drink. I guess I can't have it both ways, right? Life is good!
