Finding Joy Sober Weekender Thread - Jan 30-Feb 1
I forgot to comment on the abandoned buildings in N. Dakota and wanted to thank Mesaman so much for sharing. I am fascinated by abandoned buildings, especially ones that are left standing.
I took a wrong exit on the way to a class this summer, and found a beauty of an abandoned builing (fyi: it's not in a good part of st. louis). I was just in awe when I saw it.
It took me forever to figure out what it was, but I found this website with photos. Enjoy!

I agree with the attraction to abandon buildings...
Being an addict is like being an abandoned building. A shell of what was. Yet in the absence of that life there is beauty. Even with a sense of loneliness or emptiness you come away with both thoughts of what happened. And what could be again.

I like looking at pics and videos of abandoned buildings, malls, stadiums. My favorite is sprawling psychiatric hospitals, abandoned or functioning. I grew up near two such sites, Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center and Kings Park Psychiatric Center, both of which treated WWII veterans for "shell shock."
We used to drive through Pilgrim State while drinking beer at night, just to scare ourselves and each other. I needed to drive throug Kings Park center on the way to and from both school and work. It's a huge campus among wooded land that used to have it's own LIRR stop, grocery store, post office and everything else you'd expect to find in a small town. Employees generally lived on site. Some of the houses there are beuatiful old colonials.
I'd love to take a walk-throug in both places, but I don't think that's on offer. Whenever they were available, I'd apply for jobs at Pilgrim State, just so I could walk the hallways (in addition to the work).

Strat, I pass empty graystone after empty graystone on the way to work. These gorgeous buildings that would command a million or more in a different part of the city.
EndgameNYC, that comment had me laughing out loud. So true. Spot on. My mind is not a quiet place and my body follows although I don't think I'm one of those busy people who makes others nervous by buzzing around. Most people find me a calm presence. I need to start meditating to start calming my brain instead of letting the energy scatter like a flock of startled sparrows. A worthier project than running hither and ton.
Note to car shoppers, kia souls are terrible in the snow. It took me over a half hour to get it away from the curb to pick up my kids. Mr. Ruby tried to get it out and gave up, shouting to call a tow truck. I'm too cheap and kept at it. Finally. Once I got on plowed and salted it was fine. Now I will have to pray that I get out of the space in front of my parents house.
Not a giant Katy perry fan but that was actually not a bad half the performance.
I don't know about you guys, but the firework song just really struck a chord with me tonight, probably because it's something I can relate to so strongly. No matter how helpless we're feeling that we can't get sober, it is possible and we can do it. So keep plugging at it. You'll get there.
I thought I'd share some of the lyrics:
"Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?
Do you ever feel already buried deep six feet under?
Screams but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there's still a chance for you
'Cause there's a spark in you?
You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July
'Cause, baby, you're a firework
Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, "Aah, aah, aah"
As you shoot across the sky-y-y"

Home after a truly grueling two miles. Streets are ice caked and slicked. I'm in communication with my supervisor about not going in tomorrow as kids don't have school tomorrow. Time to tuck tiny people in bed.
Mr. Ruby will be going to work. His car is heavier and should do slightly better. I just don't have a job where I can call in just like that.
Hang in there everyone.
Abandoned Island
After seeing the James Bond Film 'Skyfall', I promptly went home and looked up the actual abandoned Island. Coal Mining under the Ocean.
A huge Filming Set was built in the U.K., and Stories were added vertically via CGI.
