Off button, On button

“Normies” have an off button. I remember being at a charity event with an open bar. Towards the end of the evening, I said to my friend, “Let’s go refill our wine.” She said, “No thanks. I don’t want to have wine in me when I go to sleep.” That still strikes me as such an odd thought.

My off button had gotten rusty. It wasn’t totally broken, but it was most certainly unreliable. What did work…at all times…was my on button. It was programmed to turn on at 5:00 pm every day.

Just being awake was good enough for me. The good news is not having to switch again!

It definitely has something to do with heredity, or genetics. Alcohol makes us feel normal. It is not the same for them. They can turn the switch off. They also know full well that it's all downhill after those first couple drinks.

I have no off switch. I am sober and while the button remains, it is not active. If I drink the button goes to On and there is no off position. The only thing that keeps it dormant is abstinence. It is like a sleeping dragon.

I too found it hard to understand people that would not drink just any thing, at anytime and all of it.

Watching them nurse one drink while the ice melted was like torture or the ones that told the bartender not to make it to strong, WHAT?

Those normal people are strange creatures to me.

I know...RIGHT? I am happy to say that my button is in the off position and I intend to keep it there.

It makes me want to find and resurrect a thread from a while back that mentions all the things we thought were "normal" as alcoholics that a "normal" person would never understand...lol

When I drank, I drank like I had the last available wine on earth and it was MINE, ALL MINE and nobody else could have any! No off button-just a "more, more" button.

I peeled the "Off" label off from below my off button. It read "Blackout".

Yea, alcohol off-buttons suck. I tried to control my drinking the last few months and was mostly successful, except for a Friday binge. I eventually quit because it was like trying to tame a wild animal. The fight wasn't worth the plight!! Plus, because of the roughly 18 years of non-controlled drinking and the events that occured.. it was just best to hit off and smash the machine to bits

I was actually thinking about this very thing earlier today ... I came to the conclusion that as alcoholics we are ALL about on or off, there is no in between. We are either sober ... or in the tangles and throes of alcohol.

I figured "normies" must have dimmer switches? Automatic timers?

Ha! I feel like I politely turned the switch to off, but I LOVE the idea of smashing it so that I never have the option of trying it again. Maybe I'll get a bit of a shock or something...

Dimmer switch? Yea...that would be awesome, but it's not available in my size!!!!!

You guys are clever.
