The sound of laughter

The sound of laughter in our house is truly the most beautiful sound of all to me.

It has become so commonplace these past few months that I can almost take it for granted. Almost...but not quite.

I can still remember how it used to be. It is 7.20 pm where I am. I would have been drunk by now. Slurred. Stumbling. My kids would most probably have made excuses to have gone out or have hidden themselves in their rooms. They would not have engaged in conversation with me, there would have been little point. I was neglectful of their basic need to talk about what was important in their lives. At the time I couldn't even see how awful that must have seemed to them. I am ashamed to think back to that time.

Tonight we have laughed so much at a show on tv, we have talked about our week at work and college. Both kids have asked my advice about their current relationships, we have planned fun stuff to do TOGETHER over the weekend, we are all connected on a level like never before.

I love to hear their chatter and laughter, it fills every inch of our house.

I am just so very grateful to have this chance to build this sort of relationship.

Being sober is just so cool, and it gets better and better.

Everyone struggling tonight, keep your eye on the prize....it is SO worth it xxx

Hi Jeni,

As always, we are right on the same page. I have all kinds of happy (albeit corny) thoughts lately. I was thinking yesterday how happy I am to be an alcoholic. Not that I would want to go through that misery again but that that's what it took for me to get to this place of happiness.

Jeni, fabulous post! You have given your family such a gift, a happy and joyous home. I'm so glad you can be fully present for them and that you're having such a good time together. Priceless.
