After putting it off for, well, at least two years I finally went into a meeting. They read a portion of the big book and then people shared their thoughts about what was read and how it related to their lives. At the end everybody held hands in a chain and said something - I can't even remember what it was.
I left as soon as the meeting ended.
Question - they talked about working the steps. When, and how does that happen? I didn't see it happen at this meeting. Maybe I missed something.
Not a bad experience -actually a positive experience. I'm definitely not ready to share yet. But I could see the day coming once I get a little more comfortable.

You begin to work the steps once you find yourself a sponsor. Look for someone who has the recovery you want. Going to meetings and talking with people before and after the meeting is a great first step to finding this someone.

Thank you for going to a meeting. It is always nice to see new faces there.

The Twelve Steps are a recovery process that takes a long time. People talk about the steps at meetings, but work on the steps outside of meetings. The steps are things like admitting your life is out-of-control and keeping sober by sharing your success with others.

glad you were comfortable, you never have to go to your first meeting again!!

I just listened to comments for a few meetings, then asked a guy whose comments sounded like what was going on with me to me be my temporary sponsor. then we started working on the steps.
