I never skipped happily away from drinking...i crawled toward the light like everyone else....it's like any other addiction, I don't buy into the *disease* concept at all for myself.

Again going back to the orginal post. There are options out there. Research them before you condem them. AA/NA is just one of the options. Make an informed decision.

AA and AVRT are not the only ways but before you dismiss them or any others do your homework, do intensive research, give them an honest try your very life depends on it.

This is not about one recovery model over another

no, it is not.

It should be noted for newcomers though that even if you do not agree with popular recovery models, or have no spirituality, or don't label yourself...none of that matters. Everyone is capable of coming out of the misery of addiction if they so desire.

Desire is huge and can not be understated. Without that methodology is unimportant

Desire is something people can lack if they have no faith in themselves.

I would have liked this thread a lot more had it not gotten on to the dreaded 'They'.

When threads start to be about other people, and what other people do, think, or say etc, things generally go awry.

Lets focus on our own stories - I think SR works best that way.

I've never been to an AA meeting - I have a lot of respect for it, it's saved a lot of my friends lives...but honestly? I didn't need to go to a meeting to know it wasn't for me.

The same applies for Rational Recovery as it happens....again lots of really close mates in the programme but I don't need to read the book to know it's not for me either.

Maybe that's my personality flaws

The thing is I did work hard and find something that worked for me, and I've been working it ever since.

the way I see it, it's our job to share what works for us...that's it.
Whether or not others pick up the trail we leave behind or not is up to them.

It's their journey, not mine.
Unless you ask for my input, your journey is none of my business.

yes, you can study it anytime. its available on line. google big book online.
no you are not obligated to follow the steps and do the "hardwork."
AA doesnt govern anyone. people are free to come and free to go whenever they want.

AA works for me and if anyone asks me how I recovered I tell them that AA and the steps were what finally got me sober HOWEVER I agree with those who counter that being in AA should mean you can balance your life and exist as a productive person outside of the rooms. Most people I know in the program have careers, family, hobbies, goals, etc. outside of AA. Those are the people I go to for advice and help in my recovery, not the ones who are "hiding" in the program. Just my experience / opinion.

I was being universal. Maybe I should have said "we".
