Hi, my name is OP and I want to stop.

Hello all.

I've been drinking for the past 9 years. I went off to university when I was near 20 and it was just regular college shenanigans. In 2005/2006 I started being a heavy drinker then stopped. However, in 2009 I began drinking heavily again due to co-worker/social outings.

I'd have the usual hangovers and despite having to get up at 4am for work, i would still drink until 1 or 2 in the morning. Even then I wasn't drinking every day. Last year however, I got a sudden pain in what seemed a little under my shoulder blade and the right side below my ribcage. I thought it was just bad heartburn or back pain.

I ended up on pain medication and getting an upper GI endoscopy. It turned out to be my liver and I had a lot of fat. It was the worst week of my life. I was sober for a month then started drinking again. I've been drinking almost for a year and a month now, almost every day. I've begun to have health issues and am scared. I really want to stop and recover and I was almost afraid to make a profile here and start posting. We all have to start somewhere right?

[Sorry if this is kind of long, just a little anxious.]

Hi OpheliaPhylaxis
you'll find a lot of support and encouragement here to help you quit and stay that way

As for medical issues, I think it's fair to say the sooner you quit the better any prognosis will be

welcome!

Welcome OP! I'm so glad you joined SR - I felt strange in the beginning, too. This place quickly became part of my life, though. I stopped after drinking for over 30 years. It still gets a bit better every day.

The more you post and read here, the less anxiety you'll feel. It's comforting to know you aren't alone with your feelings. Keep talking to us.

Thanks everyone. I do realize that when I really think about it, I'm not the only one. I've come to learn over the past few years that I have an addictive personality and if it's not one thing it's something else. One day at a time.

I do look forward to being on here more.

Welcome! The first step to changing is the desire to change. You'll find a lot of support here.
