| this is going to be so hard :(
I have been sober 2 days and already craving a drink. I have tried stopping on my own before but I can't even go a month the longest I could manage was 3 weeks then I think I can just have 1 and that's it but as soon as I have 1 I can't stop until I pass out I'm going to my first AA meeting tomorrow so hopefully I can do this.

Dan- you can do this. It may be hard, but as you can see from all the people on this site, it is doable. Keep posting on here, reading other posts, and get through this tough time. For me, AA meetings helped me so much. You will see that other people are doing the same thing you are doing, and that you are not alone. The fellowship I found there was a vital part of my recovery. I was no longer lonely. And I was able to experience real fun sober.

Welcome Dan. Lots of UK people here, I'm sure they'll be along shortly. Let us know how the AA meeting went.

Hi Dan, I am on day 3 and was in detox until this morning. I hear you....it's definitely NOT easy. I don't have much advice to give since I am in the same boat but I did 2 AA meetings tonight because I had some cravings and it really did help me. Best of luck, let us know how you are doing ((hugs))

For the first thirty days you're trying to break habits. You will feel like you need a drink because you are used to having a drink. Just know it's going to bug you, it's a habit. Go do something else. Hell, pick up a hobby. Now is a great time to find a new pastime, because if you kick the booze you are going to have a lot more free time. Best of luck. |

Hey Dan, welcome! Please consider this: in the beginning it feels like a mountain that you simply can't climb over. Forever literally feels like FOREVER and it's overwhealming. Something that I've realized is that over time, not too much time, it will get easier and easier not to drink. I know this may sound cliche but when I quit many people with more sober time than me constantly reminded me that "It will get easier" and I've found that it is indeed the truth. I always thought that it was just something people said until I experienced it for myself. The first week will feel like a living hell but keep at it and you'll make it over the mountain! God bless you my friend!

Dan, 2 days sober? You are FANTASTIC. Congratulations. At 2 years 2 months sober I don't have cravings like I did at 2 days, but I do not let my guard down for 2 seconds. It has gotten better as the days go by and I believe they will for you as well. Good luck.

I might encourage you not to think of three weeks, four weeks, months, etc. That is overwhelming in and of itself. Just take it easy this weekend, keep busy doing whatever you feel you can, and make your goal just trying to have a fulfilling day away from it. I find it helpful not thinking in terms of "this time I am going longer than last time." That is thinking in terms of a win streak that is sure to end like any sports team's win streak. You are not developing a new win streak, you are getting off that field and playing a completely different sport. Hope this helps!
