A little progress

Hi again everyone.

Well, I had my appointment with the specialist today and told her how things had been in the last week. She has taken on board the fact that it is quite clearly impossible for me to cut down any. So, as of Monday I will be starting a five day medicated withdrawal. She will come to my house at 9 on Monday morning, breathalyze me and give me the medication I need. She will also come to me every day that week to do the same.

Extremely happy at the outcome of the meeting today, also apprehensive, scared, worried and a million other emotions. Can see the road ahead, but I can also see all the pit falls and road blocks.

Not sure whether to have one last hurrah this weekend and go out on Saturday night. Thoughts? I haven't been out the last two weekends due to trying to cut down etc.

One of my biggest worries about doing this detox is my sister is having her engagement party next Saturday. Was so close to putting off the detox for a week so I could drink at it, then I started thinking that whenever I do stop drinking there will be some social event I have to deal with. I just have to suck it up, grow some balls and deal with it. Scary prospect though, how am I going to deal with a social situation without my crutch? Scared!

Hope you are all fantastic.x

Amen...You already know what the results of a last hurrah will be...More misery....Spare yourself that. Nice job on the detox...Did she mention any kind of recovery plan for you?

Dear Islandlass,

fantastic news! You are doing really well.

I suggest that the morning of your sisters do that you go for a 5-10k power walk/run, come home feeling spent/nicely tired, drink lots and lots of iced water, have a long lovely shower with your favourite shower gel, then have a nap, get up and get dressed and go to the party feeling physically and mentally happy.

I promise you that your body will feel relaxed and fulfilled all at the same time.

Of course I could be telling my Gma how to suck eggs :>

p.s. Don't forget that we now have extremely good non-alcoholic wine and beer. Why not take a few bottles to the do...

There is always going to be a reason to put off stopping, so good for you for going ahead with the detox. And, skip the last hurrah.

Thanks guys. I am seeing her again on Friday to finalise plans and talk through what happens after. I am really raring to go at the moment, but come Sunday night I am sure I will be shitting it, haha.

Sadly, I am the maid of honour and am pretty much in charge of the planning and executing of the party, hopefully just keeping busy enough during the day and running about at the party will keep me occupied enough to get through it. My lovely sister has vowed not to drink at the party either, she's a doll.

Yes. As she has to visit every day and she does not work at the weekend, she decided to start on Monday due to it being a 5 day course. She has also given me time to decide if this is what I want, which, obviously it is.

That's beautiful...You'll do a great job...You won't be ashamed...And you'll remember it. Get yourself some bottles of sparkling water or something you like...(Not crazy about the Non Alcoholic beer idea...But that's just me.)....Keep them nice and cold and have fun. Look forward to it...You'll do great....Good sis by the way!

Non-Alcoholic Wine and Beer is up and coming in the UK and helps a lot of people over the early stages of withdrawal.

That's so cool IslandLass, so glad you had a positive outcome.

I'd skip the one last hurrah too. I have done that alot, but not the last time I quit. I think it always reinforced the idea that I was giving up something I really enjoyed. I remember my last drink but I certainly wasn't sat there thinking how wonderful it was!

I had to host a few social occasions early in my sobriety and although it wasn't an entirely pleasant experience I was really proud to get through them sober. It's ace that your sister is supporting you! I'm sure that will be a massive help x

I heard a guy in a meeting one day say I didn't get rid of my ex wife so I could go out and find one just like her.

Please do not convince yourself you deserve to get drunk. Not now, not one more time, not ever. People die that way. No good can possibly come of it.

I am glad that your conversation with your Dr. went so well and she understands your point of view now. This next period will be difficult at times, but so what? There is no alternative, and you will get through it. The rewards that are waiting for you will amaze you. Hang in.

I would never compare a human being with a substance.

Some people need a little help/encouragement especially in the first days.

We are all different. We all need encouragement/help and then make our own decision.

Sorry Islandlass for this discussion between Sapling and I :> I am a great believer in giving people all the options out there, as it is only then that you can decide what you can/want to do.

Good luck and all the best for the future.
