Hi. Im New

Hi Everyone. I've been lurking for awhile and now I'm ready to share. My name is Sherri. I've been a drunk/alcoholic for 16 years. I have done so much harm to my family relationships that I can't even put in here because it hurts too much. For the last 16 years I have drank every single day. Seriously, every day. By the grace of God, I have never gotten a dui. I want to get better but I dont know how. thanks for listening.

Welcome to SR. You've come to the right place. There is so much support and understanding here. We'll support you every step of the way on your sober journey, but ultimately it comes down to you... are you ready to be sober? Honestly? 100%? Do you need it? There is no magic way, but there are many recovery programmes available. You'll find them on the main page of this forum. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery. Let us know how you get on. x

Welcome Sherri. I can certainly feel the pain you are having, after the difficulty that drinking has caused with your relationships. I can tell you are good person from the way you care so much. We can do this!

I'd detoxed hundreds of times before too - my last home detox still nearly killed me and left me with the legacy of several mini strokes...5 years on and I'm still struggling with the effects.

Be smart and see a Dr

Welcome sherri. I drank every day for many years, too. It was never enough, and no amounts made me feel good or happy. I convinced myself I couldn't live without it. I was so wrong. It brings us nothing but misery and turns our lives into chaos.

I also damaged my family relationships. No one understood what I was going through - there apparently are no other alcoholics in my family. The things I did bothered me so much that it was very hard to face life sober, but we must get past all that guilt so we can start our new life. Don't let yourself be held down by dwelling on the past. You can rise above all the troubles and reclaim your life. People will realize you're recovering, and they'll see you in a new light. Keep posting sherri!

Welcome Sherri

Morning, Day, and Nightly drinker here for over 20. You dont have to live that anymore. Thankfully you didnt hurt or kill anyone or yourself will drinking and driving. I thank my god all the time for that. I drank and drove , every time I drove I had or was drinking for many many years. Wasnt till in the 30's I got 4 duis. The first three I blamed on Ohio and the police , wasnt ready to accept responsibliy yet. Lots of yets out there still have if I were to pick up again.

Its not a prize fight , you dont beat it. You learn to live without it. Once you ever think youve beat it , and with that thinking you will. Your alcoholic voice will tell you its okay, and off to the races you go.

Glad you found us, and I hope you find a program to help you learn not only to stay stopped on drinking, but learn the skills to live life without it.

Welcome to the family! YOu've come to a great place for support and good info. I too did a lot of damage to family relationships but now my family life is normal and happy. I feel alive now, not just existing from bottle to bottle.

Glad you joined us!

I think we learn how to be sober mostly by doing it. I started out by staying sober one hour (sometimes one minute) at a time and finding out what others did that worked for them. I read a lot here, watched TV, just tried to keep things simple and not think too much (!).

It gets easier as you go and you'll get stronger and feel better mentally and physically, which will help you feel better about yourself, too. Do be careful with detox - they often get worse each time, so you can't always predict what's going to happen based on past experience. Anyway..... Glad you're here - Welcome sherri!

Sherri, congratulations on making the choice to get sober.

I lived with shame for the better part of 10 years before I made that decision and joined this web site. I think that you will find a lot of like minded people here on SR who want to help.

Spend some time in the forums, connect with people here. You will gain insights and it will get better.

Best wishes to you.
