Has anyone experienced hair loss (women) as a sign of liver disease?

I have been losing hair a lot over the past 6 weeks and it is getting worse - has anyone experienced this in relation to their drinking? I can't get it to slow down - I have been taking vitamins, a B supplement, and eating right - it just gets worse and worse....

Please, go and talk to your dr and get some medical advice.

I wish you well.

Yep - I have an appointment scheduled. I am just wondering what could be causing it to happen. I've spoken with my doctor in the past about my drinking and he pretty much just blew me off with " you should probably stop that" - not taking me serious - I need a new doc, but right now this is who I have to go through..... Ugh - I am so nervous !!

Yes, please go to your doctor. I had hair loss a few years ago, and my hair was falling out pretty badly and I had to go to the doctor. Turned out I'm allergic to iodine and the vitamins I was taking had about 300% more than the daily recommended allowance.

In other words, I would have never figured out it was my vitamins! Go see your doctor. It could be something you just did not think of. But, no matter what the cause, you need to have it checked out.

Yes, I had hair loss - it would come out in chunks in my brush. Fingernails broke off all the time and wouldn't grow either. No one ever confirmed it, but I feel that I was malnourished due to my heavy drinking for years. Hope it gets better for you!

I used to check in the mirror every morning to see if my eyes were yellow 'yet'.. to guage how bad my liver was. Sick thinking on my part.

Have you considered quitting drinking to see if it helps?

Yes, I had hair loss. Blamed it on everything except drinking.

Since I've been sober....no more hair loss.

Welcome to SR. I hope you stay. A whole lotta things get better when you quit drinking.

I've been losing my hair for the past few years...I am hoping it will stop now that the cork is in the jug...my doctor blamed it on stress but I am sure the abuse I was doing to myself didn't help....

Alcohol (and cigarettes!) definitely contributes to hair loss! It also dries your hair out and makes it wirey. I only know this because I googled it recently. My hair was very dry and I thought it was the water. It was alcohol and especially cigarettes!

35 days sober, 17 days no cigarettes, and my hair and skin are looking better!

Let us know what the doc says!

Bjork! you quit cigs right after quitting alcohol. That is truly an accomplishment. A friend of mine told me that quitting drinking was easier for her than quitting smoking. I don't know if that would be the case with me, but I am going to try to quit smoking too (again) in a few weeks. Thanks for the inspiration.

Mine stopped falling out about 3 mos. after I quit entirely. Nails began to grow again, too. It took over a year for my hair to look anywhere near normal again, though. My skin was dry & flaky, eyelashes even fell out - all of it got better. I had been malnourished, I'm sure.

Been losing mine too. I didn't even consider that my drinking was causing it! Well, there's another benefit to stopping! Day 2 and counting!

HealthyHeart, you should see a specialist for alopecia. There are a number of reasons women lose their hair, from stress to poor nutrition to injesting Bisphenol A (BPA), an estrogen-like chemical used in some plastics. It can be hard to pinpoint. Glad your tests show everything within normal range ... Take care.

Had the same problem a few years ago. It was caused by stress. I'm sure drinking didn't help either. I used "Viviscal" and it really helped.

My hair was falling out and I mentioned it to a woman who was cutting my hair. She suggested that I try using a better brand shampoo. She asked if I was using Herbal Essences and I was!

I switched to better shampoo and my hair stopped falling out.

I hope it's that simple for you. Good luck.
