What are the different AA chips?
Here are the NA colors for the key tags, along with the traditional jokes they say when they give them out around my area, if anyone is interested:
white-1 day, 1 hour, or just a desire to be clean-for the newcomer, most important person in this or any other NA meeting!
orange-30 days! (orange you glad you're not out there?)
green-60 days! (like the grass you stopped smoking)
red-90 days (now you have some blood in your drug-stream!)
blue-six months (Not feeling so blue anymore, are you?)
yellow-9 months (NA baby!)
glow-in-the-dark=one year! (so your sponsor can find you when you slack up on meetings)
gray-18 months (duct-tape gray, you stuck and stayed)
black-multiple of years (black, black, you kept coming back)
Get as many as you want to!

I heard a lead once where a guy talked about the colors in a pretty ominous way. I remember the multi-year tag (black one) as being the color of the inside of a casket. Doesn't sound very cheery, but it was a great message. I don't know if at that time I even had my orange tag (though now I do remember orange meaning danger!).

all depends on the group. My home group does 24 hr, months 1-11 and years 1-35+
I have another group that doesn't do chips at all.
Have been to groups that have out of town visitor chips, newcomer chips and home group anniversary chips.

Someone earlier mentioned the 18 mo. chip and called it the 'whiners chip.' Here, a lot of us call it the 'resentment chip' as it came out AFTER we'd already passed 18 months; two years for most of us.............grrrrrrrrr
An 'infinity' chip? hmmmmmm. Here, we don't get a chip until we've already attained the specific sober time. I guess we could throw infinity chips on someone's casket............nah!
Here, there's a gentleman who calls them bus tokens to paradise, and asks if any one wants to board the bus....

I was pissed off when I "lost" my 1yr chip but have a feeling know exactly who threw it away. Sponsor told me it doesn't matter now & handed me brown chip that says 24hr on it. Asked him what for & he said that's all I've got! Talk bout ego deflation
At the end of all the meetings I go to, the chip mink (lol) explains the chip system as something like this, "here on the west coast of Florida, we award chips to represent lengths of sobriety. The first chip or the surrender chip is the most important. Anyone willing to surrender their old way of life?" Or something like that.
My home group does every month in the first year and every year. I personally leave out the West coast of Florida thing, I've been to meetings in several cities around the country and their chip system has appeared to be the same.

We ask at the beginning of every meeting if anyone has a birthday or anniversary. If someone has an AA anniversary they get a coin (if they haven't run out of that particular one). The coin gets passed around the room and then handed to the recipient. Thirty days, ninety, a year. The only meeting they don't hand out coins is the beginners meeting I attend.
No cakes, dang it!

had a drawer full of chips due to the many returns to alcohol
I found out that it helps to keep the plug in the jug (6 year chip now)
stopped fooling myself onto that first drink (which lead to many more in time)

not sure what an infinity chip is, but there are several chips with things on it and no time designated....one has the first 3 alcoholics on one side and on the back it says something like "Recovery begins when one alcoholic talks with another alcoholic"
another says one day at a time on one side and a pic on the other
another has a picture of a camel on one side and a saying on the other.....

Every group has their own chip, keychain, medalion system. I have been to some where they will go every month, 24hrs, 1m,2m,3m,4m,5m,6m,7m,8m,9m,10m,11m, others will go 24, 1, 3, 6, 9, then if you want a 1 yr medallion or cake you got to sign up for the group and slap your name on the B'day board or list. Chips, key chains, medallions do not come from AA I am not sure where they buy it but its not from AA. The 24 hour chip can also be described as a "Desire Chip" which is what I think it originally was called. I think I had gotten one round up to a year, and multiple less then a year, then didnt really care for them anymore. But I do believe Birthday meetings are important, it shows especially the newcomer that being sober for X amount of time is doable. I think thats critically important. Anyone who has been around for awhile knows there are people out there with 50+ yrs of sobriety, countless people with 10+ yrs of sobriety.
If ever in San Diego with 90 days. Years ago in SD they had a special 90 day brass chip made up. They are available at our AA Central Office. Most of the long running meetings still give those out today.

I'm the Chip 'Chica' for my Tuesday Noon Meeting. The tradition for this meeting has been to give out chips for every month...yep....Welcome to 11 & 18 Months. Of course, yearly chips too! I am aso the cake person for this meeting, so we always have a cake or cupcakes each Tuesday....usually homemade. I love to bake since getting clean.
