I read on a recent thread that I can no longer find that there was a good link to blanking during a drinking binge. I'd be grateful if someone could direct me to it.

This has to be a very good indication of alcoholism right?

This is probably the most disconcerting part of what I've put myself through. Absolutely horrible!!! The black-outs started off short then last time I went on a bender, the majority of the night wasn't in my memory banks the following day! Horrible! then I had to try and find out what the hell I did!!!

I lost most of a decade from drinking
and still I continued.
I thought all drinkers lived with this ..

Blackouts are scary. I used to have them rarely but found that as I got older and drank more regularly -- a big night of drinking would almost always result in one.

The worst was whenever my kids would mention movies we'd watched or conversations we'd had and they'd KNOW I hadn't a clue about what they were talking about.

Haven't had one in a while. But that's not saying much.

Blackouts are extremely scary, not knowing what you did, said, who you did it to, wondering why your best friend won't speak to you . . .

When I was in prison several years ago due to this disease, I had a bunkie who woke up in jail one morning with a horrible hang over. She figured she had got busted for yet another DUI. Her family wouldn't accept her phone calls, she just wanted to find out when she could get bailed out and how much it would cost. Finally, one family member accepted the collect call with,"Pam, you really don't remember anything that happened last night?" and hung up.

Later that day she found out exactly what did happen the night before. She got drunk and caused an accident that took the lives of a family of 5.

There was no bail. Her first chance of release is in 2026. This happened in 1995.

That is an example of the progression of this disease.

Jails, institutions and death.

Welcome to this fabulous site BB. I am relative newbie to this site as well, yet not to the world of excess.

People used to wonder why I always carried a camera with me. And even as hootched as I would get I would keep up with my nightly receipts. That way I could peice the trail back together with the bar names, times and pics of people that I came across. Funny little quiks about us fellow alkees. Now I just forget useless blabble from others cause it's not worth remembering anyway. LOL

You will find so many answers here. Just hang around.

Thank you all so much guys... I still can't believe how much I fit all the descriptors of an alcoholic v. a non-alcoholic.

The very high tolerance, the excruciating hangovers, the increasing memory blanks.

I wish I'd learnt this all earlier then maybe I could have held on to a bit more self-respect

Yeah, I'm finding that there is this long a-- list of descriptions that we can choose from to describe ourselves. A whole lotta what descibes me descibes you and so on down the list. But we do have that one common descriptor.

It's akin to the greeting in church: "Good morning my fellow sinners".
