What exactly is considered "highjacking a thread"?

I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill, but I've seen this subject come up a few times. I'm just wondering, what is the etiquette here as far as what's OK to post on "someone's else's" thread?

Well, here's Wikipedia's take on the whole matter......

Thread hijacking in internet forum communication is the act of steering a discussion off-topic by discussing a subject entirely unrelated to the subject at hand.

While this can be an intentional act of trolling, it is often accidental - caused by participants in the discussion responding to a throwaway remark, thus taking the thread off at a tangent to the original subject matter. The results often provoke a feeling of resentment from the author of the original post.

Generally speaking, the person who starts the thread introduces a topic or a question and the thread goes from there. The idea is for the thread to stay more or less focused on that member and his/her topic.

But, as Morning Glory pointed out in her post, sometimes a hijacking can teach us a valuable lesson. In other words. I am here to learn, and however that happens, I will welcome it.

Wow, wikipedia. I can't believe there is actually a definition of thread hijacking out there.

I know, Stevevessel, right? Wikipedia is awesome. I use it all the time. My kids use it for their book reports too. Are we in the future or what? Every time I sign my name on one of those electronic signature pads, I still feel like it's not real. And email!! It was only 15-16 years ago I'd never even heard of such a thing and now I can't live without it. And another thing - when's the last time you saw a phone with a cord? So silly. And what would I do without my cell? When they first came out I thought they were so frivilous.

Oh. Excuse me. Am I butting in here? Sorry.
