One Year and Under Club Part 58
Some days my AV uses some of the posts on SR of people slipping and coming back to start over. I always play it out in my head and know that I don't want to go through that again ever.I'm getting very close to my record sobriety time if I haven't already passed it, largely, if not solely because of SR.

Hi Helen - it can really take you by surprise, can't it? I like to think that each time we feel that pull towards alcohol but refocus our attention and walk away, it strengthens our sobriety a bit - like a muscle. So even if we continue to be tempted, it will gradually become easier and easier to walk away. (That's what I tell myself, anyway!). Well done for being honest with yourself about what was happening and what the likely outcome would be. It's not easy... x
Helen- I have had that happen to me too at the grocery store. I find if I look towards the wine/alcohol section I will get a craving. So I don't look that way and if I need something around there I grab it quick. I remind myself I don't buy alcohol anymore and I know once I leave the store I am ok. It is helpful not to shop hungry too.
I hope everyone has a great day. I am on day 313.

oh you guys the same thing happens to me. Why do we even look? Because we are alcoholics that's why ! I too remember how sick I got and that I don't want to ever go down that nasty road again and I don't want anyone ever to feel that crappy. Ohhhh I'm thank ful to be here. Have a great day everyone !

I was going to someone's house for dinner last night (people I don't know too well) and felt I should take a bottle of wine - it felt very strange purchasing wine in the supermarket. I planned to just grab the first bottle of mid-priced red I saw, but actually ended up choosing a merlot, which was always my go-to favourite - as I walked out of the supermarket, I thought how daft that was. Why tempt myself? Anyway - I also bought some nice non-alcoholic drinks for myself, handed the bottle of merlot over to the hosts and didn't find it too difficult to stick to the non-alcoholic stuff. Felt weird, though - I think that's the first time I've purchased a bottle of wine since quitting.
I moved to my current state when I was 5 months sober. I was appalled to discover that the grocery stores here have very large wine and liquor areas immediately inside the door. No way to avoid them as I had done in my previous location. It was dicey for awhile but now I walk through without any cravings. I hadn't thought about the change until I read your posts. It really does get easier :-)
I know what you mean Saskia. My state formally had very tight rules on alcohol distribution. Beer could only be purchased by the case at a beer distributor or at a bar. Wine and hard liquor could only be bought at a State run store.
Now, grocery stores can sell beer and wine, and even some convenience stores. I find this very annoying that they changed the rules after I quit drinking. For a bit, I did not shop in the stores that began carrying alcohol, but am now at the point that it doesn't bother me. I just think it is overall a bad idea making a poison like alcohol more readily available to the masses.
Have a great day all!

Hi Stargazer - yes, I agree. When alcohol is openly on the shelves, it sends out the message that it's as harmless as the fruit / mineral water etc on the shelves in the other aisles.

Hi folks.
My husband got home yesterday and brought with him - you guessed it - a bottle of Clamato juice, bartenders' blend! LOL I told him my story of what happened in the grocery store and he was mortified and said he would get rid of it, but I assured him it was an "in the moment" thing and I am fine with drinking a virgin Ceasar.
In other news I cleaned out my liquor cupboard this morning. I have lots of booze that I never drink, specialty liquors and such. I am giving it away, and if I get no takers I will pour it away.
Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

Helen, I remember giving friends grocery bags of partially full bottles of odd things like Schnapps, weird flavored vodka and random cordials. Just kept things that I knew DW would drink, like rum. Though, since quitting, she really doesn't drink at home any longer.
Happy Easter to those that celebrate.
Off to work in a few hours.
