Mythical, magical, and divine birds. Last night’s swan was a little freaky. Here’s one of a friendlier feather: the common nightingale. The British variety of the bird, Luscinia megarhynchos, is an unspectacular little thing to look at:
However unprepossessing its appearance, the nightingale’s voice bewitches and amazes. If you want to listen, just go out in the woodlands in the UK one evening in April through late June, or click here: Luscinia megarhynchos : Nightingale - Turdidae - British wildlife recordings - Environment and nature | British Library - Sounds.
Because of its amazing voice, the nightingale has earned fame in myth and poetry – so much so that I may have to stretch the nightingale over a few posts. These lines of John Keats are addressed to the nightingale, with whose song the poet’s heart aches from….
If you wonder what a dryad looks like, she’s a tree spirit, like the one in this painting by Evelyn De Morgan (but in the case of the nightingale, much smaller, male, and with wings).
I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in the next 24 hours!
P.S. Until this post, I couldn't have told you who Benedict Cumberbatch was, but now I know that a person can watch Benedict Cumberbatch doing almost anything on youtube, including reading Keats. And he reads Keats beautifully, albeit with an unnecessary soundtrack in the background. I find the poem “Ode to a Nightingale” a bit sad, but sad or not it’s a thing of beauty, and a joy forever, so here’s the link for those who want to enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrAGCJJkNbE.

Airwick congratulations on 5 months! Goat way to go....17 months!! I'm learning lots on The Roosevelt's Doc. My heart was just aching for Eleanor last night, when she found out about FDR cheating on her with Lucy.
I'm signing in for another 24 hours of my recovery, thanks to my HP & AA.

Busy, busy week (inservice) so I didn't sign in yesterday, but I also didn't go down the rabbit hole.
Tonight, I was a bit tempted, but stuck some food in the oven. Now feeding the dogs. Gonna make it.

12amET...in MD; went to noon mtg that had heard about & seen in aa directory but hadn't gone till today! Wonderful would be understating it. Absolutely dynamite! Men's mtg tonite was for friend also celebrating two yrs just as I did couple wks ago. 24 more pls
