| Need Info Please
hi everyone, hope ur all well. i have been posting under the friends & familie sof alcoholics, and someone suggested that i post my question up under here as it is a narcotics related one. i have a brother who is addicted, who thinks he is not, who denies that he is addicted, who thinks he can stop whenever he wants, so he obviously thinks he has control, which my parents and i can see he hasnt, he thinks he is doing this to kill some spare time he has, who says its for fun ( i laugh at that excuse) .. anyways the list of excuses just goes on and on and on... my question is, because addiction is just so technical, i would love some information on it...why does my brother hang out with these people? why does addicts get addicted? how does addiction work? .. maybe if we had a bit more of an understanding about addiction and the person and the mind, my parents and i might be able to help ourselves and our brother/son. any info would be great...if there is any info out there in the greek language as my parents dont really understand much of the english language, it would be great too. thanks in advance. |

| GLAMACHIC!A place to start is with the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonomous and the NA Basic Text. Also, I would Google the terms for more reading as well as go to the library for books. Under the Influence and Beyond the Influence are good books you can get on Amazon. I admire you for wanting to learn about addiction. Only one of my family members ever read up on the subject. IMO, addiction is a disease consisting of a mental obsession and a physical compulsion. It is not a "choice," meaning, I did not wake up one day and say, "Gee, when I grow up, I want to be an addict." Nope. This disease does not discrimninate. It leads to jails, institutions or death without a strong, honest program of recovery that addresses the phsyical, mental and spiritual aspects of the person. I hope that helps. Others will be along, too, to add their suggestions and information.

hello glamachic, i am an addict and i know what your going through, for i believe every family goes through hell when everything comes to lite. in my opinion, people become addicted for a number of reasons. my own personal experiance was easy. im an individual who has always had a low self esteem, and was always so afraid of drugs, legal or illegal. the narcotic pills to me changed the way i felt about myself and really brought me out of a low self esteem mind set that ive always had. with that in mind, i thought to myself that the pills were legal and they made me feel like a million bucks. i can function 110% at work and in my personal life, so theres no problem. totally incorrect. these things kill you slowly, when abused. they destroy your liver and kidneys, and has a negative effect on your body and mind when you do stop. withdrawls are worse then hell. just so happy im was strong enough to say no to heroin. hope your doing well, and keep your head up. your brother well appreciate what your doing in the long run, but its up to him initially.. best of luck. oreo

Update on my brother...he no longer lives at home..well hasnt been home for about a week...he no longer cares about his business or real estate..doesnt care weather he pays taxes or not... if he doesnt get locked up for drugs he will most certainly get locked up for tax evasion or what ever its called.... i think he is hitting rock bottom...his so called "friend" who's belongings are in my parents garage is in jail for drug dealing ... i think its more hard for my parents to accept than it is me...i am more disappointed in him than upset... no offence to anyone but do u think drug addiction is a sign of weakness? |
