| Hi all, I am not sure who can help me and I am kind of embarressed to ask or state that I am in search for a sponsor. You would think that after having a little more then 2 yrs clean time that I would have had a sponsor(s) or better yet KNOW EXACTLY how to get one. I walked my butt into a NA meeting for the first time in Feb. 2004, I have bought several books I1st one was the NA Just For Today book, and I still read it each day it lays on my end table by my alarm clock, I have the NA It Works How and Why and I have another one some where. I have quite a few self help and guidence books, I used to attend 5 or 6 NA meetings a week, then less and less and less I joined this SR site prior to the 1st time I had the courage to walk into a meeting. I have met a LOT of wonderful upliffting knowledgable people through the groups and SR & it has helped me wonderfully!!You'd think after doing all the things I have to get where I am today that I would have the knowlege of HOW TO GET A SPONSOR. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!! As stupid as it sounds is I am embarressed to ask at a meeting, here in the SR rooms anywhere about What do I do to get a sponsor. I have had a lot of people that have been surprised that I have made it this long and NOT relapsed, I won't say that I have not thought of doing just 1 more hit. I have had a VERY ugly battle and I am still in the middle of a battle. People that have seen and read me in SR are a little familiar with my struggles and those that don't well I am just a VERY GREATFULL RECOVERING CRACK ADDICT!!!!!!!! But I am at a point where I feel that I do not just want but I NEED to get a sponsor to help walk me through the steps, to guide me. I feel that my life is going to get a little rough again, not because of drugs but I am finally getting a divorce from my AAH. It's going to get ugly and I want help, sorry all I am rambling, but can anyone guide me in the right direction? I could ask my AAH considering he has just gotten his 5th sponsor since Feb 04. But my AH is a large part of the reason I am welll was at was I was at over 2 years ago, I was nothing but a Fed up crack head and my DOC was just MORE, MORE, MORE . I am PROUD to have gotten so far on my own and with the help of meetings and SR, but I really think I need to get a sponsor and I am to embarressed to ask someone face to face at a NA meeting for help in getting a sponsor. Thanks guys and sorry for rambling I hope I have made a bit of sense... ~Ro~ |

I'm proud of you, too, Ro, for making it this far on your own and with NA meetings. A sponsor is really important - has been for me. Look around the rooms for a woman with quality clean time that you like what she says in meetings. Then ask. Let me tell you a secret of what I do when I am scared or don't want to do something - I pray for willingness! I call it the step before the step. It has worked every time for me. Good luck and keep us posted, ok?

Sorry about that, Rho. We are upgrading the servers here at SR and I was unable to post several times yesterday so I bet others were having the same problems. Please don't think it's you, k? I'm glad you're here. Please keep posting and reading. SR is a great place for information and support.

Heya Rho, I've been thru a few sponsors over the years. Here's what works for me. - Pick out a half dozen folks who look happy, joyous and free at the meets. Folks who welcome newcomers, help set up and take down, and volunteer for commitments. Ask each one of them out to lunch and ask them how the program works for them. - From that half dozen folks pick the one you feel most comfortable with. Tell that one person that you are looking for a sponsor and would they recommend another 4 or 5 people that have a lot of sanity and serenity in their lives. Here on the left coast we call that a "tempoary sponsor". - Go have lunch with the next 4 or 5 people and ask them how the program works for them. - You now have almost a dozen folks you've spent a little time with. If you feel very comfortable with any of them ask that one person to be your sponsor. If you are not comfortable with any of them then ask each one to recommend another for you to interview. As far as being embarrased.... gee, if that's the toughest problem you have in your life today then you're doing pretty good. So toss the embarrasment in the "God box" and get your tush out there and get you a sponsor. Mike
