| Hey
Well I'm a 23 yrs old female from The Netherlands and I feel really hesistant to post at the boards since I noticed that ppl get banned for having an opinion and all but here it goes. I been clean since March 31st, never attended an NA meeting tho. Why? Cuz the whole idea of an external Higher Power just doesn't get to me. I don't believe in it, I probably never will. I feel strenght in myself mostly. But the point is I'm still quite depressed at times and all (even suicidal) and now ppl are saying I should try out a meeting anyway. What can I expect? I really dunno.

Welcome to SR. You should check out NA. It is not a religious program, It is based on spiritual principles. A higher power is of your own choosing, you don't have to believe in anything specific. He**, you don't have to believe in anything if you don't want to. That is the beauty of this program, our diversity. Check it out.

Hey BSP Girl, I share your beliefs about a lack of a higher power and have been to many NA meetings. You will find a group of people who want to help you with your addiction problems. During the course of a meeting is probably not the time to get into a discussion about the HP thing, but afterward members usually congregrate and just chat with each other and you can get to know some people. Even if you don't "work" the program, as long as you have a "desire to stop using" you are welcome to attend the meetings. If nothing else they are a good place to meet other clean and sober people.

Have you read the chapter, To the Agnostics, in the Alcoholics Anonymous big book? It's worth reading. You might find that you get a better understanding of this whole "higher power" thing. It's just a belief in a power greater than yourself, not any specific god or religion. I'm told that can mean nature, or even the group itself. Good luck to you. |

heh BSP- in the NA basic text there is a story from a recovering addict who is an atheist... its not important the most imprtant thing i had to learn about a higher power is : I AM NOT IT!! once i got my ego out of my way, i stood a chance i just had to recognize that all of my insanity [and being an active addict IS insane] all of my insanity comes from MY head- ME doing everything MY way on MY conditions with MY preconceptions.... it took listening to some other people, some other way before i could take the actions to get and stay clean its been working a while now for a bunch of us hugs mackat |
