| Just being truthful, not offendful
Hi all, I am desperately trying to make it through today and I cannot find a na meeting. People here have told me go to aa and just substitute the aa for na. well i went to aa and i don't like it, maybe it was just the group but they just made me feel second class because my doc was heroin. I have absolutley no self esteem right now and it's not about having thick skin and shaking off the looks. I don't need that crap on top of my plate already. Any suggestions on how to deal with this meeting situation. then on top of it all i got my wife thinking that i'm trying to get high when i say there isn't any closer meetings than 30 minutes away. this stinks!!!

Hi; I understand your frustration. During my recovery I lived in a rather remote area and the only meeting was an AA meeting. I did attend it for a while, but then learned of an NA meeting in the same town and quickly changed. There were only 5 other people there, but I took what I needed from it. I also know what its like having loved ones think that you are using or planning to use when you clearly aren't. It takes them time to learn to trust us again, and we need to earn that trust back. Ask yourself this. Would you have driven 30 minutes to get heroin if thats the only place you could get it? If the answer is yes, then honey, pack a coffee in the car and have a nice 30 minute drive to an NA meeting. Most of us would have done anything or driven any lengths to get our DOC, but what are we willing to sacrifice to get clean? Maybe you need the drive any way. Could be a break for you. Have a great day, and keep on keepin on. My thoughts and prayers are with you Love Diana

| Friday NA meeting in Plymouth Looks like there is only one meeting a week where you are. That does suck. I've been irked at AA meetings, too. Sometimes it does feel holier-than-thou. But Diana has a point about the driving. Half an hour doesn't sound so bad to me. Or you could try some different AA groups. That can make a big difference. My thing was opiates, but I just introduce myself as an alcoholic when I do go to AA and I try to identify at the deeper level of the disease of addiction. I'm sure you're not the only person in Plymouth in your boat. Wishing you the best! Peace, love, and hugs, Eddie

Massachusetts Area Code City Phone Number Toll Free Local-InState 866.624-3578 413 Chicopee Pittsfield 538-7479 443-4377 508 Nantucket Island 228-5739 Return to Main Phonelines Page AA is different than NA. Some AA members are addicts that want to save face and not their ass. maybe you should move to an area whrere there are NA meetings. Maybe you should try to start your own, or pool members together and see if someone will start one. WWW.na,org has starter kits available and I think they are free. Kirsten |

No not all members of AA are addicts and they just don't know it. There is the disease of alcoholizm (AA) and the disease of addiction (NA). The disease of addiction effects the obsessions and compulssions. Drugs are just the symptom of that disease. The disease of alcoholizm has some of the same characteristics as the disease of addiction, but AA talks about the powerlessness of the alcohol where NA talks about them powerlessness of disease of addiction. If you had cancer how much research would you do to educate yourself on your cancer? If you had cancer how much research would you do about treatments? Treat this disease just like that. Educating yourself is great. Not only does it teach you about your health, mind and sprit, it validates the hell out of you, seeing you have a disease not a moral delemma, in black and white-- somewhere other than NA but from a doctor feels real good.
