Got a call!

Hello Friends,
I got a call at 6:40 am. Sponsee calls, just finished his 90/90 two days ago, tells me I'm about to use. Someone waiting for me in front my house with the stuff. This isn't stepwork.

I remained calm and told him it's your choice, seems like you already made up your mind. I'm no magician, and I don't have a secret power to stop you. I'm afraid you're setting yourself up to fail and 'prove' that the program doesn't work. This grabbed his attention. we talked more.

He told me that he had 'dropped' his step 1 by calling the guy. I told him that he should have called me earlier and brought out that he had using thoughts at his meeting last night before it materialized into the execution phase.

I also told him that if you do not use today, and this does pass, because everything passes, then you would have gone through a critical situation and not used.
For the first time in your life you did not execute on impulse. In the future you would be able to draw back on this.
He was lucky. The person got tired of waiting. I suggested he take a shower and call me back.
Showers sometimes do miracles to disrupt our chain of thoughts.
I'm wondering if I did the right thing and would appreciate some advice on what would you do if you got a similar call?

Sonds like the two of you did everything great. Your sponsee thinks enough of you to call before using and you gave practical suggestions.

wow, 6.40 a.m. too earlly to use, he had it preplanned, from the nite before, i give him the credit for calling you, but he has to clean his side of the street, obvious he needs to really understand the powerlessness, and what step one is all about. his mind is trapped in the 90/90 meetings, i finished so life is fine, ask him to check his HONESTY, and manepulation. i only worry if my sponsee might O.D. then things would get messy, with my own feelings, remember we are not magicians, as sponsors, i know i get frustrated, but it is his choice to be clean or go back to the street and start active adiction. my opinion he will use sooner or later,, sorry to be blunt.......it is a matter of a few more days, keep us posted, cheers ya ma3lama

Sounds like God gave you the right words to say. glad the guy left. It was his choice, you are 100% correct there!

I had a call from a fellow NA member once who was already drunk. I talked her into pouring out the bottle in her house.

You are right, we are not magicians. We can only try to speak reason and hope something gets thru their addict mind!

blessings, Sheila

Excellent work. I commend your sponsee for calling BEFORE using...no matter how close the call. Many call aftewards and want you to save them from themselves. I also agree that this experience can be a stepping stone to prevent using in the future.

I agree. I would be pleased that someone called me in this situation no matter what time it was. Obviously, we don't want to wake up every day at 6a.m., but if it is only on occasion, it would be worth it to me. You may just have saved a life today!

WOW!
ala, I have no idea how I would have responded to that situation, especially at 6:40 AM. Personally I don't recall a sponsee ever calling me until after they already used. But it sounds like you dished out some real gems that I will try and commit to memory. I hope you don't mind if I copykat your sponsor anti-relapse techiniques, LOL!
