Blast from the past I ran into someone today that I used drugs with about 25 years ago. I didn't recognize him. He looked so much older and weathered. The drugs took their toll. I was glad to see him and grateful that I have not been using drugs all these years.

Yeah - reality check, eh? I went to a birthday dinner with my friend and her mom and mom's boyfriend last week. After the dinner my friend told me that she and her mom's b/f went to high school together! What?!? He looked at least 10 years older than her! I didn't say it outloud, but I wondered to myself if he is an alcoholic or addict. It takes a toll, ya know?

Gratitude is the word! I ran into a old sponsee of mine last week at a speaker jam. He wasn't attending, just passing by...and he was still using. He relapsed about 4 years ago and I got to say he looked pretty bad. We talked for a while and all I could here him say was excuses for why he didn't stay clean. I told him that there's always a chair for him in a meeting and I gave him my phone number. He was pushing a grocery cart full of bottles... I see people I used with all the time, and each time I see them I'm filled with gratitude and empathy.

It just goes to show that nothing has changed--"out there". I'm glad to be in recovery.
