| Physical pain
Hi everyone, What a yucky day. I've had the mother of all migraines, just now clearing up. I guess sobriety isn't just one big picknick, is it? I "forgot" that one of my legitimate uses for opiates was my migraines, which come about every couple of weeks. This was my first "clean time" migraine, which meant that I couldn't use any decent painkillers. Well, I'm not really tempted to, because Suboxyn would block them anyway. But it really is hard to endure a migraine without anything but motrin. I used to have several prescriptions to deal with them. And I used to go to the Emergency Room when they were completely unbearable (about 3 times a year) and get a shot of demerol or dilaudid. Not anymore. Ugh....at least it is starting to feel better now. It scares me to think about some of the really bad migraines that last for 2-3 days. I guess will have to just hang in there. I think I will ask my doc to try the stuff like Imitrex again. (They're non-narcotic and don't have any abuse potential, at least not for me.) ![]() I've been so happy this week that I had forgotten the real reason I got started with opiates, pain. Not giving in, not giving up. Thanks for listening to me. KJ |

Opiate use can actually cause rebound headaches, so most doctors will want to put you on something like Imitrex (I use Relpax, though it's been six months or so since I've had to take one). Migraines are no fun, but you can get through them without relapse. Be honest with your doctor and your sponsor! Peace & Love, Sugah

I know a few people who suffer from migraines and use Imitrex. Look at what you wrote - Quote:

I would make an appt. with your doctor. There are meds that can help so that those migraines never get started. Once I began taking the antidepressant I'm on I'm down to one every four or so months. I have an order in at the military ER (husband is in the Coast Guard) for something for nausea and Toradol. I've never had any luck with the migraine meds. Narcotics just make me ill when I have a migraine and like you, I was perscribed my first narcotics (my DOC) when I started getting migraines. I was suprised at how much better Torodol and the nausea med helped. I hope you find something that works for you.

I used Zomig and Maxalt. Zomig worked the best! It started working within 20 minutes and you can take it during any stage of the migraine. Some migraine meds you have to take before the headache (if you have auras, see lines or flashing lights) and some you take on a daily basis to prevent the migraines. I prefferred Zomig, you can get the kind that melts on your tongue, it works faster. Maxalt and Zomig are NON-NARCOTIC and NON-HABIT FORMING. Look them up online, if you like the sounds of either of them, ask you doctor if you can try one of them. Good luck! I know migraines SUCK and I am praying that you can get better relief. Luv Jaz PS - I have read that narcotics are not really that great for relieving migraines anyways in certain studies, they can cause rebound migraines when you stop taking them after taking them often for the migraines. Oxycodone CAUSES me to have migraines so I can't even take that medication at all! So look up Migraine Medications online, you can find more than Zomig and Maxalt, there are a lot out there.
