Incarceration is just dry time to an addict, sense it is forced upon someone there will always be reservations when the person has the choice again. There is a sense of resentment because the fact that there is no choice to really be made. Drugs are also usually available in prisons so he might have not been clean his whole stay their like you expected. Its a choice that will never be able to be forced upon someone, he could have used the time sober, if he was and had a great base to start real recovery from but it is the person in the end thats all. Hope this gave you something to think about. Ryan |

Hello. I was just watching a prison documentary about this same issue and MANY of the inmates, once released, will go back to using almost 100% of the time if they never went through therapy and drug counseling. These apparently are the two most important things one must do while incarcerated AND once they get out. I hope I helped.

An addict doesn't stop using until they really want to. Obviously, he never really wanted to and jail was just an interruption. As already mentioned, reservations are when we tell ourselves, "If this or that happens, I'm gonna get high." He apparently told himself that once released, he would try it again. It could also be that he never acquired the tools needed to combat his addiction, and because his abstinence was forced, once he was left to his own devices he did what he knew how to do...use. In case you didn't know, there's a major difference between being clean and being in recovery. Very, very few of us can do it alone without help.

((((dogged)))) drugs are available in prison so just because he was in for 5 years does not mean he stayed clean the whole time. He may not stay clean in prison this time either. A lot with our prison system is really messed up...
